CABG Surgery: Perioperative Nursing Care and Procedures
This paper examines coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) as a perioperative nursing topic, covering four key areas: the surgical procedure and its goals, causes of preoperative anxiety and nursing interventions to reduce it, immediate preoperative patient preparation in the surgical environment, and the responsibilities of circulating and perioperative registered nurses in the operating room. The paper highlights how nursing personnel support patients physically and emotionally across the full perioperative continuum — from preoperative instruction and anxiety management through intraoperative monitoring to postoperative care coordination — and emphasizes individualized, patient-centered care throughout the CABG episode.

- Preoperative Anxiety: Causes and Nursing Interventions: Sources of anxiety and nursing strategies to reduce it
- Immediate Preoperative Patient Preparation: Steps taken before the patient enters the operating room
- Circulating and Perioperative Nurse Responsibilities: Nursing roles and duties throughout the surgical continuum

What makes this paper effective
- Clearly organizes content around four discrete clinical objectives, making it easy to follow the perioperative care continuum from procedure overview through postoperative nursing roles.
- Grounds each section in both pathophysiology and patient-centered nursing practice, connecting the technical aspects of CABG with the human dimensions of care such as anxiety management and family communication.
- Draws on a mix of peer-reviewed nursing literature and authoritative clinical sources, lending credibility to practical recommendations.
Key academic technique demonstrated
The paper effectively uses objective-driven structuring — a common format in nursing education — to systematically address each component of perioperative care. Each section opens with a clear clinical focus and supports claims with cited evidence, demonstrating how nursing students can synthesize clinical knowledge and scholarly sources to produce structured, practice-relevant writing.
Structure breakdown
The paper follows four sections that mirror its stated objectives: (1) a pathophysiology-based explanation of CABG and its therapeutic goal; (2) a discussion of anxiety causes and evidence-based nursing strategies to address them; (3) a step-by-step account of preoperative preparation in the surgical environment; and (4) a description of circulating and perioperative RN roles during and around surgery. A references section closes the paper in APA format.
Overview of Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting
Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is a surgical procedure that facilitates blood flow to the heart in patients with coronary artery disease or coronary heart disease (CAD/CHD). CHD is a medical condition characterized by the accumulation of plaque — composed of substances such as fat, calcium, and cholesterol — inside the coronary arteries, which are responsible for supplying oxygenated blood to the heart. This plaque can block or narrow the coronary arteries, thereby reducing blood flow and potentially causing a heart attack.
CABG is one means of treating CHD. The procedure involves grafting a healthy vein or artery and connecting it to the blocked artery. This grafted vessel goes around, or "bypasses," the blocked area within the problematic coronary artery, creating a fresh passage for oxygenated blood to reach the patient's heart muscles. The procedure also helps treat individuals who have suffered heart damage following a heart attack but still have blocked arteries (University of California San Francisco, 2017).
