Understanding how the heart works, an individual's risk for heart disease, and how to prevent or delay heart disease is essential. This paper addresses the relationship between cardiac arrest and coronary heart disease, explains how the heart functions, and discusses ways of preventing both conditions.

Cardiac Arrest

Cardiac arrest is a condition involving the sudden loss of heart function. It can occur in someone with a history of heart disease or in someone with no prior cardiac history, affecting both males and females of all ages. The most common cause of death related to cardiac arrest is coronary disease. Cardiac arrest occurs when the cardiac vascular system ceases its functions; brain cells that require aerobic respiration to produce ATP will stop functioning and die within four to six minutes (Martini & Nath, 2009).

Cardiac arrest is typically described as a sudden collapse in a patient who is unresponsive and has abnormal breathing. Recognizing its signs is critical for survival. "Cardiac arrest requires prompt cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), and optimal post-cardiac arrest care" (McDonough, 2009).

The cytoplasm of a damaged cardiac muscle cell differs from that of a normal cardiac muscle cell. When oxygen levels decrease, cardiac muscle cells become highly dependent on anaerobic metabolism to meet energy needs. Over time, the cytoplasm accumulates an abundance of enzymes associated with anaerobic energy production. Deterioration of the membrane of damaged cardiac muscle cells allows these enzymes to enter the surrounding intercellular fluids. The presence of these enzymes in the circulation indicates that an infarction has occurred. Diagnostic blood tests can detect these enzymes. The most common enzymes that may appear are cardiac troponin T, cardiac troponin I, and CK-MB — the MB isomer of creatine phosphokinase, which occurs only in cardiac muscle.

Coronary Artery Disease

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a condition in which plaque builds up inside the coronary arteries. Plaque buildup is caused by cholesterol deposits that narrow and eventually block the arteries (CDC, 2010). The progressive narrowing of the arteries is known as atherosclerosis. The most common symptom of coronary artery disease is angina — chest pain caused by insufficient blood flow to the heart muscles (Dewey et al., 2004). Coronary artery disease can weaken the heart muscles, leading to heart failure in which the heart cannot pump blood normally.

For some patients, the first symptom of coronary artery disease is a heart attack. Patients may experience intense pain, burning, or pressure in the chest. These symptoms intensify with exertion, consumption of a large meal, emotional stress, or exposure to cold air. The pain is often described as a feeling of suffocation or shortness of breath. It typically originates in the sternum and radiates to the chest, shoulders, jaw, arms, and entire upper body. When these symptoms are recognized early, medical intervention can save lives; unrecognized and untreated symptoms can be fatal.

Coronary artery disease leads to heart attack when blockage in the arteries deprives the heart muscle of its blood supply, causing the muscle to die. The death of part of the heart muscle is what constitutes a heart attack. In the United States, coronary artery disease is the most common type of heart disease (CDC, 2010).
