What makes this paper effective
- Uses direct quotations from executives and industry analysts to ground claims in authoritative sources rather than relying solely on general assertions.
- Organizes the analysis around distinct strategic dimensions — value creation, market access, brand exchange, financial strength, and logistics — giving the argument a clear, layered structure.
- Connects macro-level industry trends (health consciousness, energy drink growth) to the specific corporate decision, showing cause-and-effect reasoning.
Key academic technique demonstrated
The paper effectively applies strategic management concepts — including value chain analysis, market diversification, and partnership synergy — to a real-world corporate case. By framing each section around a distinct strategic benefit, the author demonstrates how to evaluate a business alliance from multiple analytical angles simultaneously.
Structure breakdown
The paper opens with an industry overview establishing context and competitive threats, then introduces the Monster partnership as Coca-Cola's strategic response. Subsequent sections build progressively — from value creation and market access to brand portfolio transfers, financial gains, and finally the logistics infrastructure that makes the alliance viable. The conclusion-adjacent logistics section ties operational capability back to strategic rationale.
Industry Overview
The carbonated beverage industry is one of the oldest and most complex industries in existence. It is heavily dependent on customer loyalty developed over decades, as well as on marketing and innovation to grow new revenue streams. A growing number of potential threats now face the industry. One emerging trend across many developed-country markets is that consumers are becoming increasingly health conscious, causing demand for drinks containing high-fructose corn syrup to diminish relatively rapidly in some segments. Coca-Cola has had to innovate and diversify its product mix to appeal to these demographics.
Another threat is that younger generations are seeking new types of drinks and new product brands. The energy drink industry, for example, has grown rapidly. "Globally, the energy drink industry has gone from a $3.8-billion business in 1999 to a $27.5-billion business last year, according to data from market research firm Euromonitor. That's a more than 620% jump" (Foeger, 2014). Demand in new market niches has led Coca-Cola to find innovative ways and partnerships to meet emerging consumer demand.
The Monster Energy Partnership
Coca-Cola has recently entered into a long-term strategic partnership with Monster Energy Drinks. The Coca-Cola Company announced that it had entered into definitive agreements for a long-term strategic partnership expected to accelerate growth for both companies in the fast-growing, global energy drink category (Coca-Cola Company, 2014). The new partnership leverages the respective strengths of The Coca-Cola Company and Monster to create compelling value for both companies and their shareholders.
Value Creation and Market Positioning
This partnership adds value to Coca-Cola's product mix through the addition of a strong brand in the energy drink niche. As consumers shift preferences away from carbonated soft drinks toward alternatives such as sports and energy drinks, bottled water, and ready-to-drink (RTD) teas, Coca-Cola needed to strengthen its portfolio in these fast-growing segments in order to maintain its share of the overall beverage market. Although Coca-Cola had established itself in the global bottled water and sports drinks markets with popular brands Dasani and Powerade respectively, the company had negligible presence in energy drinks, which represent the fastest-growing beverage category (Trefis, 2014). The addition of Monster to Coca-Cola's portfolio helps fill this void for the company and its investors by positioning it within the growing market niche.
Monster will also improve its market access through Coca-Cola's global supply chain and distribution system. Rodney C. Sacks, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Monster, explained the partnership as follows (Coca-Cola Company, 2014):
"We gain enhanced access to The Coca-Cola Company's distribution system, the most powerful and extensive system in the world. At the same time, we become The Coca-Cola Company's exclusive energy play, with a robust portfolio led by our Monster Energy line and The Coca-Cola Company's energy brands. Our business will be bolstered by The Coca-Cola Company energy brands we will acquire, providing us with complementary energy product offerings in many geographies, as well as access to new channels, including vending and specialty accounts."
Monster will improve its market access both horizontally in emerging markets and through new distribution channels such as vending machines.
