This practicum has advanced my career through a greater understanding of the day-to-day operations of counselors, as well as the procedural and formal issues that must be thoroughly mastered prior to certification. During this practicum, I engaged in 63 direct practice hours and 130 non-direct hours. This time has provided me with substantial real-world experience that will prove invaluable in the future. Exposure to different counseling philosophies and approaches has opened my mind, and I intend to incorporate what I have learned into my future practice.
Direct client contact involved intake sessions, group sessions, and a number of interactions rooted in prior academic coursework. I also found that the indirect practice hours were helpful in showing me how counselors protect their clients — ensuring that client information is kept private, confidential, and accurate.
Eager to continue growing, I recognize several additional areas in my professional development I wish to pursue. These include working with people facing serious mental health issues and substance abuse, as well as gaining experience in family counseling. I also want to explore options for client advocacy and public policy, and to learn how to integrate technology into the counseling profession.
Yet already at this point in my program, I feel I have come a long way. I have been working with a diverse patient population for years and have long desired to become a professional counselor with the ability to influence people's lives and make a difference in my community. My professional abilities have improved as my confidence has grown. When I interact with veteran counselors, social workers, and psychologists, I feel increasingly like a colleague. I have also sought the support of mentors who can help guide me through the next phases of my career. My motivation remains high when I have a social support system; when I become frustrated or doubtful of my abilities, my mentors typically provide inspiration and encouragement.
It can be difficult to narrow down my accomplishments into specific areas, but I am especially proud of how I learned to manage the paperwork and administrative duties necessary to keeping patient data safe.
The first accomplishment I will mention is learning how to chart. This may seem relatively insignificant, but it is the cornerstone of effective practice. Second, I learned how to conduct intakes to the point where I was performing them smoothly. The first few felt rehearsed and I was nervous, but the more I completed, the stronger my intake reporting became. Third — and perhaps the accomplishment of which I am most proud — I learned how to build trust. The foundation of the client-counselor relationship is trust, and I learned how to use both verbal and nonverbal communication skills to foster mutual trust with clients.
The fourth accomplishment I will mention is mastering the clinical computer system. Related to charting, the computer system is crucial for keeping client data accurate, preventing errors, and ensuring continuity of care when clients transfer to another facility, system, or geographic area. Finally, I learned how to lead group sessions. At first, I found group sessions challenging because I was nervous in front of so many people. After the first few sessions, my confidence grew, and I now envision myself leading groups regularly in the future.
