This reflection paper presents a DNP student's self-assessment of a health systems development and leadership practice immersion course. The paper evaluates Course Level Student Learning Outcomes, End-of-Program Outcomes, and Leadership Role-Specific Competencies gained through course readings, leadership shadowing, faculty mentorship, and a practicum project. It also reflects on the value of DNP Practicum Project team mentorship, emphasizing the role of expert guidance, continuous feedback, professional networking, and the integration of evidence-based practice. Together, these experiences are assessed as foundational to the student's development as a competent, well-rounded nurse executive.
This course in health systems development and leadership practice immersion has been enlightening, to say the least. Personally, I feel that I have been given a solid understanding of health systems development and what leadership must look like within the nursing profession. I feel much more confident on my path forward than I did at the beginning of the course — and that is always a good sign that the course was effective. In this paper, I reflect on the Course Level Student Learning Outcomes, some of the End-of-Program Outcomes, and the Leadership Role-Specific Competencies that I acquired as a result of this experience.
This course has been an enormous help in my mission to grow my skills, my knowledge, and my ability to bring theory and practice together in my real-world nursing experience. The DNP Essentials have been an excellent guide with respect to focusing on the nurse executive role-specific competencies that formed the backbone of my learning experience. Several areas of this course stand out as particularly relevant.
The readings provided the framework for my experience: they were like a welcome guide, and I was the visitor. They introduced me to the goals of the course and gave me a strong theoretical foundation from which to make sense of real-world issues in nursing. The discussion threads helped me compare my experiences with those of others, bringing all of our real-world experiences into a fuller perspective through the application of theory.
For example, I recall a discussion on patient-centered care in a multicultural setting, which made me realize the importance of cultural competence in healthcare. This aligned with DNP Essential II: Organizational and Systems Leadership for Quality Improvement and Systems Thinking (Giardino & Hickey, 2020). It was a genuine "aha" moment — everything seemed to click and fall into place. What we were learning and experiencing was not compartmentalized into separate silos; rather, everything was connected, with each element feeding into the others.
I also gained valuable insight from shadowing experienced nurse leaders in the field. There is something uniquely powerful about observing a nurse leader while also working alongside that leader in a real clinical environment. It provided hands-on experience while also serving as a mentorship opportunity — I was functioning in the field and simultaneously supported by an experienced leader. That combination is the type of experience I am most grateful for. I could see first-hand the importance of effective communication and collaboration, along with examples that directly reflected the Leadership Role-Specific Competency on conflict resolution and negotiation (Beasley & Ard, 2021).
My interactions with my mentor and professors were consistently informative and enlightening. The feedback I received on my coursework was constructive and helped me focus specifically on how to incorporate evidence-based practice into my professional viewpoints. This experience brought home the meaning of DNP Essential III: Clinical Scholarship and Analytical Methods for Evidence-Based Practice (Kesten et al., 2022).
My practicum project allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge in practice — something I had not anticipated doing in such a focused and deliberate way. For instance, I used leadership strategies to engage a team of nurses, which reflected my understanding of the Leadership Role-Specific Competency on team leadership and collaboration (Matsuda & Watanuki, 2023). This was a genuine breakthrough for me in understanding how to translate classroom knowledge into fieldwork.
Overall, this course has been a great help, and I now view it as a substantial cornerstone of my personal, academic, and professional growth. It has provided new knowledge and understanding, meaningful experiences to reflect upon, and an opportunity to sharpen my leadership skills. I feel more prepared than ever for the challenges and responsibilities that a nurse executive must handle. The combination of theoretical knowledge, practical experience, and mentorship has made me more confident, and I fully feel ready to be a leader in the nursing profession and in healthcare systems.

My experience in this course and the subsequent collaboration with the DNP Practicum Project team mentor has been enormously helpful. The course has given me a solid foundation in health systems development and leadership, and has demonstrated the importance of bringing theoretical knowledge into practical experience. The discussion threads, leadership shadowing, and interactions with mentors and professors all enriched and supported this learning experience, leaving me with a holistic understanding of the nursing profession's many facets.
