What makes this paper effective

  • It applies standard organizational behavior frameworks—vision/mission analysis and SWOT—directly to a real company, grounding abstract concepts in a concrete case.
  • The SWOT analysis is clearly organized and connects internal factors (brand strength, revenue scale) to external pressures (low-cost global competitors, internet-based alternatives).
  • Recommendations flow logically from the weaknesses and threats identified in the SWOT, demonstrating coherent analytical thinking.

Key academic technique demonstrated

The paper demonstrates applied framework analysis: it takes a recognizable business tool (SWOT) and links its findings directly to organizational behavior concerns such as human capital development, workforce policy, and competitive strategy. This technique shows the student can move from diagnosis (identifying weaknesses) to prescription (recommending training and market reform).

Structure breakdown

The paper follows a four-part structure: (1) Vision Statement — contextualizes Etisalat's goals within the UAE regulatory environment; (2) Mission Statement — connects the company's technology initiatives to its stated purpose; (3) SWOT Analysis — systematically evaluates internal strengths and weaknesses alongside external opportunities and threats; (4) Recommendations — proposes two OB-informed solutions addressing workforce skill gaps and market competitiveness.

Vision Statement

Etisalat's vision is a world where people's reach is not limited by matter or distance. As a telecommunications company, its primary vision is to create social connection and enable the seamless transfer of information regardless of geographic location. In essence, Etisalat aims to create a world where people can effortlessly stay in touch with family and friends. In addition, the company envisions a world where businesses of all sizes can reach new markets without the limitations of distance and travel.

This vision, as it relates to organizational behavior, is particularly ambitious. Competition driven primarily by globalization has created an environment in which human capital is vital to success. As the case illustrates, the UAE has imposed employment restructuring requirements that affect the company's overall ability to achieve its vision. Specifically, the UAE has required Etisalat to employ a certain percentage of its workforce from the national citizenry. On the surface, this appears to be a reasonable requirement, as it allows domestic citizens to benefit from the country's largest telecommunications provider. With over $20 billion in annual revenues, such a requirement seems logical (Etisalat Group, 2012).

Mission Statement

Etisalat's mission is to extend people's reach. The company is actively developing advanced networks that will enable people to develop, learn, and grow. It has been at the forefront of technological innovation, including a 3.75G network deployed in Egypt. In addition, Etisalat owns a majority stake in Thuraya, a leading provider of satellite telephony.

The case illustrates how the UAE and Etisalat share aligned goals. Innovation often requires unique perspectives on existing technology. It is therefore encouraged to allow young, talented nationals to contribute new and innovative ideas to the organization.
