This paper examines key concepts in nursing education, beginning with the distinction between goals and objectives — broad end results versus specific, measurable outcomes. It applies the Texas Textbook Evaluation Tool (T-TET) to assess Bastable's Nurse as Educator (4th ed.), evaluating organizational format, content quality, and inclusion. A sample teaching plan focused on catheter care illustrates how goals and objectives translate into clinical instruction. Finally, the paper discusses the role of learning contracts in supporting self-directed learning, highlighting how such contracts help learners align personal goals with course objectives and sustain commitment to professional development in nursing.
The terms "goals" and "objectives" are often used interchangeably, but they do in fact connote different things. Particularly in the context of teaching and learning, it is important to differentiate between the two. Goals refer to broad end results, whereas objectives tend to be more specific (Norman, 2017). For example, a learner may have a goal of improving patient care, with the learning objectives being to reduce medical errors by fifty percent.
Another key difference between goals and objectives is that the latter can and should be framed in measurable or quantitative terms. Goals do not need to be measurable and can in fact be personal or even emotional in nature, whereas objectives do need to be concrete. For example, a goal might be to master a new informatics system, while the specific learning objectives would be to input three hundred new data points into a particular information management system.
Used especially to evaluate nursing textbooks, the Texas Textbook Evaluation Tool (T-TET) has become something of a gold standard in the field. Applying the T-TET to the Bastable (2014) text provides a useful opportunity to work through this tool systematically.
