Findings from the Vietnamese Study

Prior to the implementation of the new protocol, 13.1% of patients in Vietnam were diagnosed with a hospital-acquired infection. After implementing the alcohol-based hand rub protocol, the average infection rate fell to 2.1% — representing a reduction of 84% in the nosocomial infection (NI) rate, irrespective of gender, age, or other demographic factors (Nguyen et al., 2008, p. 1298). This result clearly demonstrates that alcohol-based hand hygiene, when used regularly and rigorously by all levels of healthcare personnel prior to any procedure, can dramatically reduce infection rates.
