The Houston Toad thrives predominantly in sandy places near swamps and small water bodies. The layer of sand needs to be at least one meter deep. Their habitats may include oaks, pines, and other trees found in open areas. Some species found in this habitat include Ilex vomitoria (yaupon holly) and Pinus taeda (loblolly pine). Nearly stagnant water sources are ideal for the breeding of the Houston Toad. These breeding grounds may be presented by shallow ponds or places where water accumulates from springs. Shallow areas on lakes are also ideal breeding grounds, such as those found at Bastrop State Park Lake. The toads also breed where floodwaters accumulate.

They will choose water bodies that lie in close proximity to their dwelling places, as this proximity affects the chances of survival for the tadpoles. These places must not be heavily populated with predators, as noted by Jackson et al. (2006), for then the chances of survival would be next to none. The toads also find their food — the insects that breed in such environments — more easily in these locations. The importance of this species lies in its function of keeping insect populations that threaten crops and vegetation under control. Thus, their role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem cannot be ignored.

Reproductive Behavior and Life Cycle

The Houston Toad can be found in its habitat throughout the year. It is especially detectable when the males emit their mating calls during the breeding season. These calls can typically be heard between December and June, with breeding occurring between February and March. This high-pitched call lasts approximately fifteen seconds and emanates from various locations, including objects and plants floating on the water as well as from short distances away from water bodies. The pitch of this call exceeds that of Bufo americanus (the American Toad). Stimulated by high humidity and warm evenings, actual breeding takes place between February and March (Jackson et al., 2006).

When the males' calls are answered, the females make their way to the water body where they will lay their eggs. This occurs only when conditions are warm and humid. The eggs are laid in the water, after which the males fertilize them. The tadpoles emerge approximately one week after fertilization. Depending on water temperature, they develop into toadlets within two to fourteen weeks. These young toads then move onto land, where they develop into full-grown toads and become ready for breeding in the following season. Females require approximately two years before they are ready to breed, while males are ready in just one year. Under suitable conditions, Houston Toads can fertilize eggs throughout the year once they reach one year of age. The toadlets feed on insects (Jones et al., 2012), making them a useful part of the ecosystem by helping to control insect populations. The insects that thrive in these swampy environments are harmful not only to vegetation but can also affect livestock and farm animals.
