This paper examines the oracle bones of ancient China's Shang dynasty, exploring their multifaceted roles beyond simple divination. Discovered in the 1800s, these artifacts — fashioned from animal scapulae and other bones — were used to consult ancestral spirits, record historical and political events, and demonstrate an early decimal mathematics system. The paper also considers oracle bones as evidence of Shang religious practices, including appeals to nature and ancestral deities. Situating oracle bones within a broader cross-cultural context of divination traditions, the paper highlights their lasting significance to the history of writing, religion, and mathematics.
During the Shang dynasty in China, oracle bones were used not only as a divination tool, but also in conjunction with medicine, mathematics, and the recording of events and history. These oracle bones — sometimes called "dragon bones" — were only discovered in the 1800s and still pose mysteries regarding their many uses and interpretations. It is believed that interpretations were made through the heating of the bones, which were fashioned from animal scapulae and other skeletal material, to "read" the message found in the resulting cracks.
Oracle bones represent some of the earliest forms of writing on record. Much like the I Ching, they were used in divination — practitioners would heat the bones, interpret the cracks that formed, and deliver guidance on a wide range of questions. Many people consulted the oracle to appease nature deities during harvest time, and also to ask ancestral deities questions about fortune and the future.
Beyond divination, oracle bones were also used in what practitioners called "Ancestral Healing." Through the oracle bones, healers could consult the spirits of the ancestors and thereby diagnose and treat ailments affecting living relatives of the deceased. This practice blended religious belief with medical consultation, reflecting the deeply integrated nature of spiritual and physical well-being in Shang culture.
