~3 min read 4 sections Business · Organizational Behavior
Abstract

This paper introduces the foundational concepts of organizational behavior, drawing on psychology, social psychology, sociology, and anthropology to explain how enterprises can strengthen their workforce. It examines the three components of attitude—affect, behavior, and cognition—and their interconnected influence on employee performance. The paper also discusses Perceived Organizational Support (POS), the drivers of job satisfaction, and how positive job attitudes lead to Organizational Citizenship Behaviors (OCBs). Together, these concepts illustrate how effective leadership and management practices can cultivate an ethical, productive, and engaged workplace culture.

What makes this paper effective

  • Clearly defines key terms—affect, cognition, behavior, POS, and OCBs—before applying them, giving readers a solid conceptual foundation.
  • Uses a concrete example (a worker believing their pay is low) to illustrate the cognitive component of attitude, making abstract theory accessible.
  • Emphasizes the interconnected nature of attitude components, reinforcing why managers must consider all three together rather than in isolation.

Key academic technique demonstrated

The paper demonstrates concept-to-application mapping: each theoretical construct (e.g., the ABC model of attitudes) is immediately linked to a practical managerial implication. This technique grounds organizational behavior theory in real workplace scenarios, which is a hallmark of effective undergraduate management writing.

Structure breakdown

The paper opens with a disciplinary overview situating organizational behavior within its contributing fields. It then examines the attitude triad (affect, behavior, cognition) in depth, before moving outward to job attitudes, Perceived Organizational Support, and job satisfaction. It concludes by connecting these constructs to Organizational Citizenship Behaviors, framing high satisfaction as the foundation of a productive workplace culture.

What Is Organizational Behavior?

The foundations of organizational behavior are grounded in best practices drawn from psychology, social psychology, sociology, and anthropology. This multidisciplinary nature is deliberately designed to provide a highly effective, flexible, and reliable platform for helping enterprises strengthen their employees while attaining organizational goals. Creating a highly ethical, effective, and productive workplace becomes possible when the core precepts and concepts of organizational behavior are applied to motivate and manage employees.

The Three Components of Attitude

At the core of organizational behavior are the concepts of attitudes—including the debate over whether behavior follows attitudes or not—how attitudes affect job performance, and the fundamentals of job satisfaction. There is a very strong correlation between job satisfaction and performance attained on the job. The core components of attitude include affect, behavior, and cognition. It is critically important to view attitudes through these three components working in conjunction with each other in order to fully appreciate their complexity and the difficulty involved in managing and maintaining them.

Affect and cognition are specifically inseparable in many ways, which makes the role of a manager or leader even more complex and multidimensional. Leaders must be continually aware of how the attitudes of peers, subordinates, and superiors are affecting the overall productivity of the organization. The cognitive component is illustrated by a worker who says their pay is low—this is a description of a belief about how things are. The affective component defines the emotional or feeling sentiment and often triggers behavioral outcomes. The behavioral component of attitude concentrates on the intention to behave in a certain way toward someone or something. Working in conjunction with each other, these three components set the foundation for how employees' attitudes are created and sustained over the long term.

Job Attitudes and Employee Engagement

Job attitudes also define the level of employee engagement, involvement, satisfaction, and enthusiasm for the work employees do. Perceived Organizational Support (POS) is a critical attribute of job attitudes, as it defines the extent to which an employee believes the organization values their contributions and cares about their well-being. Job satisfaction is created and sustained when leaders and managers cultivate a high level of POS for each position, tailoring their support to the specific needs of individual employees.

The definition of job satisfaction is notably broad: it refers to a very positive feeling about a job resulting from an evaluation of its characteristics. The factors that contribute to job satisfaction include providing interesting work that offers training, variety, independence, and meaningful control over one's tasks. When managers design roles with these elements in mind, they lay the groundwork for sustained employee motivation and loyalty.
