In most cases, supply chain management (SCM) research entails the forward flow process — the transformation of raw materials into final products (Dekker & Fleischmann, 2012). This flow process incorporates the movement of goods from suppliers to end consumers. However, comparatively little attention has been given to the reverse movement of materials from end customers back up the chain. Researchers have defined RL as the activities entailing planning, implementation, and control of the cost-effective and efficient flow of raw materials, finished goods, in-process inventory, and related information from the end-user point back to the supply point of the chain for proper disposal and recapture of value. This definition incorporates refurbishing and remanufacturing activities.

In the United States in 2004, the RL market reached an estimated value of approximately $58 billion, representing roughly 0.5% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP). That year reflected a growing RL sector spanning a wide range of industries including electronics, publishing, automobile, and chemicals, among others. Fierce market competition has propelled retailers to adopt liberal return policies, and ill-prepared RL operations have resulted in significant financial losses for many U.S. companies.

Rising competition driven by rapid advancements in technology and globalization has led organizations to focus on enhancing their supply chains' efficiency. Improving reverse logistics efficiency — including better recovery of returned products and end-of-life (EOL) product disposal — is one means through which companies aim to maintain and increase market share and competitiveness. The reverse movement of materials, packaging, and product returns falls under the reverse logistics field and encompasses, but is not limited to, recycling, remanufacturing, reselling, refurbishing, repairs, and disposal activities. Product return rates range from approximately 15% for traditional merchandisers and manufacturers to 35% for the e-commerce sector (Huscroft, 2010).

The reverse logistics process within a firm comprises predominantly two facets: product returns and packaging returns to the manufacturer or point of origin. Research has shown that goods are returned either to the production or distribution point to address EOL concerns through recycling, refurbishing, or disposal. Another characteristic of the RL process is that it is almost always a component of a closed loop, wherein packaging or products flow out to customers and are then accompanied by a reverse flow of those same assets — typically in a transformed condition or state (Huscroft, 2010).

Companies have recognized the reverse channel as a target for efficiency gains and cost reductions, and have begun treating the reverse process as a differentiator and a value-added facility. This differentiation serves to maintain or increase market share, improve revenue, and potentially reduce inventory and transportation costs through efficiency gains and continuous monitoring of RL processes. The recent heightened focus on RL has begun a transformation in organizations, moving beyond mere customer service with timely product delivery toward overall customer satisfaction. Organizations are moving past the initial business transaction with customers to ensure fulfillment of customer needs when purchased products must be exchanged or returned (Huscroft, 2010).

This paper employs multiple literature reviews to identify intersecting and mutually constitutive aspects of RL and logistics centers. With such information, the study seeks to identify the best industry practices incorporated in information sharing, performance metrics, and collaboration.
