Student Information and Demographics: The student is a sophomore at his university, is of Latino descent, and is new to the district.
Presenting Concerns: The student's grades have dropped, he quit writing for the school paper, is sullen and rude in class, and has been spending time with a group of so-called popular peers who may be troublemakers. His teacher and mother are concerned that he may be drinking with them.
Assessment Process: A thorough psychological and behavioral assessment should be conducted, drawing on information from the student, his teacher, and his mother, as well as any available data sources. This process will help determine the underlying causes of his current behavior, including relevant internal and external contributing factors.
Diagnostic Impressions: The student may be experiencing depression and anxiety, both of which could be affecting his academic performance and behavior.
Differential Diagnosis: Other related diagnoses may include substance use disorder or adjustment disorder, resulting from the student's recent move and difficulties adjusting to the new school environment (Baruth & Manning, 2016). Adjustment disorder is a particularly relevant consideration given the significant life change of relocating and enrolling in a new school.

Multicultural counseling frameworks emphasize the importance of understanding how cultural identity intersects with mental health and academic functioning.
Social/Emotional: The student may be experiencing depression and anxiety, both of which are affecting his social and emotional functioning.
Legal and Ethical: Ethical and legal considerations specific to school counseling — such as confidentiality, informed consent, and mandatory reporting — must be addressed when developing a behavior plan (Sori & Hecker, 2015).
Student Strengths: The student has identifiable strengths, including his writing talent and his desire to connect with peers.
Psychopharmacology: Common medications that may affect learning, behavior, and mood in children and adolescents include antidepressants, stimulants, and antipsychotics. Awareness of these possibilities is important when coordinating support across school and clinical settings.
Outcomes: The behavior plan should include operationally defined measures of success, such as improvements in the student's grades, classroom behavior, and overall well-being.
