Getting a job: Research review

I intend to enter into the field of finance, so there are no professional associations like the AMA (American Medical Association) or ABA (American Bar Association) which function 'gatekeepers' of admission to the profession. However, networking in business is extremely important and is often a critical aspect in securing a job. Thus, becoming a member of a professional association can be valuable opportunity for a new job-seeker. Business Professionals of America (BPA) is a professional association designed to foster the advancement of future business professionals, and could be an important resource of information and offer networking opportunities at conferences for a student just staring out in the field.

However, even after establishing a presence in a profession, professional memberships can be important in improving one's credentials and securing a promotion or a better job. The American Finance Association publishes a journal and also has an annual meeting for members, during which critical issues in finance are discussed and members can become aware of opportunities to learn about new openings in the field.

A final organization that might be useful in professional advancement is the Toastmasters, which is a public speaking organization. Members come from a variety of disciplines. Meetings focused on improving public speaking skills, a critical component of conveying one's worth to an organization. Staying abreast of current developments in the financial field and technology is also essential to ensure one's skill set stays relevant. In the future, pursuing an MBA or an 'executive' MBA (a degree with limited residency requirements and often online coursework for working professionals) is another possible way to ensure that I can maximize my opportunities for promotion.
