S. Fish and Wildlife, 2004). Since the Shortnose Sturgeon is protected on Federal property, this agreement does not pertain. There is no Candidate Conservation Agreement for the Shortnose Sturgeon because there is no development of proposed listing regulation precluded by other higher priority listing activities, which is a mandatory element of its initiation. Economically, the Shortnose Sturgeon is a very marketable and saleable food product. The fish is very popular and its demand is very high. The fish is regarded as a high economic producer and its decline in population and rise in protective regulations have affected the fishing industries within and around its habitat. In terms of economic cost, the preservation, protection and procurement of habitat has been estimated to have cost well into the millions of dollars. Controversy has arisen regarding the Shortnose Sturgeon as arguments have been made that it is not in complete danger of extinction - these arguments mainly argued on the part of the fishing industry (SOCNFWR, 2007).

To the avail of the Shortnose Sturgeon, it has made remarkable population and recovery advances in recent years. The majority of this growth has been attributed to its conservation and protection. According to the department of natural resources at Cornell, the population of the Shortnose Sturgeon has increased by more than 400% in the Hudson River since the 1970's (Lang, 2007). This comes in the wake of nearly 30 other species that have gone extinct under the same protective measures within the same area.

In full consideration, the protection of this fish has rendered its recovery. The commercial fishing of the fish has begun...

The Shortnose Sturgeon is regarded as one of the most successful recoveries of endangered species and will continue to be protected to the measure necessary to conserve its habitat and population. In effect, this will undoubtedly strengthen local economies and influence more protection measures of other declining aquatic species.
