There is still a great deal of prejudice and ignorance about the mentally ill, and how to treat patients suffering from psychological disorders. Professor Feudenthal was to show compassion, without ignoring the serious implications of mental illness. She was also able to show how psychological concepts were evident in our own psyches and lives, not just in the lives of our future patients. Professor Feudenthal was a charismatic and caring teacher because she was genuinely interested in how people lived their lives and perceived their own state of wellness, as well as how textbooks defined mental health. When she encouraged students to come to her office hours, not just for help on exams but "just to talk," she really meant it. I took advantage of her offer, and enjoyed discussing what had been covered in class with her. I often saw current and former students stop by her office, and her desk was full of notes, cards, and flowers. She never seemed to forget a face, and always was eager to hear about their experiences in the field. Even as a student, I felt like a valued colleague of hers.
I still keep the card she sent to me after the class was over. She signed it: "you are a joy." The joy that I brought to learning was kindled by her joy in teaching.
