Affirmative Action has been an issue of great debate and controversy since its establishment. Because of the very fact that such legislation was deemed needed is indicative of the mass inequality existing in a country that was formed on the basis of the individual liberties and justice. Affirmative Action is a legal and social response to help eliminate the historical and social inequities of minorities and women and America. The deployment of a social progress regime enforced by law reminds us as a society, how grossly impaired we are in upholding and actualizing the virtue that "all men (and women) are created equal." Critics of Affirmative Action are many; dismantling Affirmative Action is of continued debate. Opponents of Affirmative Action argue that more qualified white males are passed over for jobs, contract selection and other opportunities in favor of less qualified minorities and women. Those who are critical of this legislation calls Affirmative Action reverse discrimination, unfairly giving an advantage to those who are less qualified on the basis of race and/or gender. Naysayers of Affirmative Action indicate that Affirmative Action policies do the exact opposite of its intended purpose, instead of helping minorities and women it cripples them by promoting socioeconomic inequalities. For example, minorities and women from backgrounds that are not economically or socially disadvantaged may receive more benefits from Affirmative Action from their counterparts who are. If Affirmative Action is designed to give a hand up to those who really need help but really just gives a hand out to those who don't then it is not performing as originally designed.…
