¶ … excites you about Math/Science and why would you want to spend a month at Cosmos

Do not worry about your difficulties in Mathematics. I can assure you mine are still greater." -- Albert Einstein

This quotation of Albert Einstein illustrates what I love about math and science -- although studying math and science can provide human beings with concrete answers and solutions, studying math and science also provokes human beings to ask more searching and seemingly unanswerable questions. The work that science has done to improve human life is clear and demonstrable, but the process of understanding the world is never done.

Both the theoretical and the practical applications of math and science have always fascinated me. Cosmos would give me a chance to explore how engineering is being used to solve problems of everyday life, but also a greater understanding of the physical principles that guide the discipline.

Although I have enjoyed all of my coursework at my high school, the times when I have felt freest to truly let my interest take free reign is when I am doing labs, working on my own on my computer at home, or doing science fair projects. At Cosmos, I would be able to propose my own hypothetical scientific questions and to use my abilities to explore and research new answers, rather than simply be a receptor of knowledge. I would also get a better understanding of what life is like for scientists, researchers, and engineers, by receiving the guidance of professionals in shaping my final project.

One of the most exciting aspects of Cosmos is that at the end of the session, I will be able to share my findings with my home community. I know that some people my age regard science as dull, but I hope that I will be able to take my enthusiasm and knowledge and show how science can be creative, practical, and empower individuals with greater knowledge of their physical environment, and improve the quality of human life.

This has had the unintended consequence of increasing the dropout rate, as students who fail to perform and to be promoted leave the schools altogether. Many good, creative teachers also drop out, frustrated with the stringent controls placed upon their teaching style. ELL (English Language Learner) students are at a particular disadvantage for taking standardized tests, given the frequently arcane wording of the exams. The tests are often poorly written,

STEM does not refer to an abstract and vast area of study, but to the passions and interests of my ten-year-old son, who is so interested in STEM subjects that he finds the pace of learning aimed at most students his age to be tedious and uninteresting. The last thing I want, as a parent, is for him to lose the passion and interest he has in these topics.

Pendulum Waves Science Fair Report Richard Berg from the University of Maryland explained in his journal how to build a set of uncoupled pendula, which display "pendulum waves" back in 1991. The patterns exhibited by this demonstration are quite breathtaking and the manner in which the patterns actually cycle is nothing less than spectacular. This demonstration is available in The Video Encyclopedia of Physics and it is also somehow simple to

decision to become a math major should not be taken lightly. Recent graduates are generally required to have a master's degree and the job market for mathematicians is competitive ("Mathematician: Summary" 2012). In 2010, there were only 3,100 positions for mathematicians in the U.S. And the need is expected to increase by only 16% between 2010 and 2020. Those who are able to secure a position as a mathematician

(p. 55-56) The educational system up to this point, very likely to continue in the future, has swung back and forth between these two philosophies (individualist and essentialist) in a pendulum effect, as educators seek to engender interest for knowledge in the student. Interestingly the application of the core principles in the Paideia Proposal can be applied to both swings of the pendulum as it demands that the core subjects
