My attitude has changed resulting from the information I learned about business communications quite dramatically. Business communication in my opinion was always something that was important to people working as managers or administrators, but I never fully understood how critical business communication is to all people regardless of the field they work in. The components of business communication most important to my field include learning how to translate one's thoughts into oral and written communication in multiple forms.
Nurses have to document all interactions, whether with patients or with other healthcare professional (Riley, 2000). While many are provided with charts they can use to fill in information, it is also important for nurses to know how to create strong narratives and oral presentations when providing information to others. Nurses often have the obligation of responding to patient or familial inquiries, which require strong oral and written skills (Locker, 2006; Fitzgerald, 2001). Building goodwill is one of the most important facets of being a nurse (Riley, 2000) because it allows the nurse to treat patients in the best way possible, by focusing on communication, patient needs and the ability of the nurse to help people using correct and adequate communication skills.
