Laaser's attempt to emphasize problems associated with addiction and his focus on reaching out to readers who might identify with the problems he describes are discussed throughout the essay. Mark Laaser's book "Healing the Wounds of Sexual Addiction" provides a complex explanation with regard to sexual addiction and presents readers with a program they can undertake with the purpose of changing their lives for the better as they leave addictive habits behind. As a former pastor, Laaser has an intricate understanding of this topic and can also relate to matters from a first person perspective. The writer acknowledged the condition that many people in the contemporary society are in and thus focused on devising strategies that are likely to be effective in helping people overcome their problems.

Laaser primarily wrote this book with the intention to emphasize an idea that most people are unacquainted with. Ten percent of the total Christian population in the U.S. is sexually addicted. This obviously means that the matter is more concerning than it might appear to some and Laaser's book is virtually meant to urge individuals in becoming familiarized with techniques they can use with the purpose of fighting this issue. There is a significant probability that some of a person's acquaintances are sexually addicted, thus meaning that the general public needs to be able to understand the complexity of the problem.
