Challenges -- Domestic Abuse/Teen Violence

Domestic Abuse

Domestic abuse takes place when one person in a close relationship or marriage attempts to govern and control the other person in the relationship. Domestic abuse that comprises physical violence is known as domestic violence. Domestic violence and abuse are utilized for one reason and one reason only and that is to get and continue total control over someone else. An abuser never plays fair. Abusers use terror, guilt, disgrace, and intimidation to wear a person down and keep them under their thumb. Domestic violence and abuse does not distinguish. It takes place among heterosexual couples and in same-sex relationships. It takes place within all age categories, ethnic backgrounds, and economic levels. And while women are more frequently mistreated, men are also abused, particularly verbally and emotionally, although sometimes even physically as well. The bottom line is that abusive actions are never tolerable and need to be stopped (Domestic Violence and Abuse, 2011).

All people should be respected by those with who they are in a relationship with. Ending domestic abuse is something that will take a very long time to accomplish, but heading down that path is the right direction to do in. Oftentimes domestic abuse is seen within families spreading from one generation to the next. If this vicious cycle can be broken then there will be a lot of people that will not have to become victims. There would be many people that would be spared the consequences of being abused. This people instead will be able to live happy, healthy lives. There needs to be help for the abusers as well as the victims and both people in the relationship need to do things differently in order to break the domestic abuse cycle and eventually put an end to this occurrence all together.

Teen Violence

Teen violence is a learned behavior. Children learn violent behaviors from their family and peers, as well as watch it in their communities. These actions are reinforced by what young people see on television, on the Internet, in video games, movies, music videos, and even in what they hear in their music. When kids are punished with harsh corporal punishment or verbal abuse, or when they are physically or sexually abused, or when they observe such actions in their home, it is not unexpected that they act violently toward others. Most significantly, efforts should be aimed at radically lessening the contact of kids and adolescents to violence in the home, neighborhood, and through the media. As a person is exposed to more risk factors, the likelihood that they will take part in violent actions goes up. Undoubtedly, violence leads to violence and the cycle needs to be stopped (Teen Violence, n.d.).
