Sylvia's Lovers is a rich and gratifying historical novel, which does not put on a pedestal imprudent behavior. In the novel, not only does Gaskell describe the significant historical events but also exposes the impacts that these historical events can have on the lives of lower class members of the society. The violence of war disrupts people's social lives, making them go for desperate choices, which change the bearings their lives take. This brings about a lot of misery among the people, especially those from the lower social class.
