Diverse Student Body

Diversity is a very important and significant issue for many academic institutions today. Gone are the days when only 18-year-olds straight from high school inhabited university campuses. Today, there are many different kinds of people attending universities all over the world, and I would make strong contributions to this diversity. I am 37 years old, and until recently, I worked as the owner of my own construction company. While I enjoyed this work and learned a great deal, a came to the life-changing decision that I wanted to attend medical school. I have rearranged my life for this, and it has not been easy, but it has been rewarding in many ways, and I am certain that everything I have gone through to this point and will go through in the future will be well worth it when I achieve my dream.

Since I have life experience, I can be very valuable to other students that might be younger and can benefit from the life lessons that I have already learned. Many of these lessons are not found in a classroom, but out in the world where I have already been for several years. Since I am a business owner, much of what I need to know about hard work, scheduling, and interacting with people are things that I have already learned and can therefore pass on to others. This will also help me in the goal that I wish to attain, because I am aware that medical school is very rigorous, and the process of becoming a doctor is not an easy one, nor one to be taken lightly. While I may be a bit older than many individuals that have the same career goals, I feel as though this is not a drawback. The things that I have already learned in my life will be a help to me in many ways, and the compassion that I have learned when working with others will help me as my schooling and career progresses, because I will be able to relate to much of what others are going through. The diversity that I will bring to the university will help others at that same institution, and I will in turn be helped by learning with and from others that are different from me.

Moore shared this insight with other children's-book writers, librarians and editors, including Elinor Sinette, Franklin Folsom, Mary Elting Folsom, Frances Keene, Stanley Faulkner and Sylvia Faulkner" (Kohl, 1991). Later on the Council on Interracial Books for Children was founded by Moore and they made it their cause to highlight the flaws in the text books. The council not only supported reform but it also became an example of an interracial

.." (Fluker, 2006). According to research, 90% of faculty and 75% of students enrolled in doctoral religious studies programs in the United States and Canada are Caucasian (American Academy of Religion, 2003). Fluker argues (and rightfully so), "Without racial and ethnic diversity, schools fail to create a positive institutional climate in which students from all backgrounds can succeed. Without racial and ethnic diversity, students fail to meet and learn from

According to these authorities, "Workplace stressors often have detrimental effects on faculty job satisfaction and may lead to decisions to leave the institution or to leave higher education entirely. Although some degree of turnover is inevitable and perhaps desirable, high rates of faculty turnover can be costly to the reputation of an institution and to the quality of instruction" (p. 776). In many cases, the very faculty members that

Diversity and Leadership Roles Diversity typically plays a major role in leadership and administrative issues in a school setting. Many schools have a widely diverse student body, faculty, and administration, and diversity issues involving gender, ethnicity, religious affiliations, and even basic social perspectives occur on a daily basis (Howard, 2007). As a grade school principal I am often charged with helping different interest groups such as parents, students and teachers navigate

The shift toward standardized testing has failed to result in a meaningful reduction of high school dropout rates, and students with disabilities continue to be marginalized by the culture of testing in public education (Dynarski et al., 2008). With that said, the needs of students with specific educational challenges are diverse and complex, and the solutions to their needs are not revealed in the results of standardized testing (Crawford &

Student Body Size on School Costs and Academic Performance in Mississippi High Schools One of the most heated point of contention within school districts currently is the variable effects of school size, school funding and student performance. There are costs and benefits associated with school size and especially class size and those issues effect school funding, as it is largely accepted that less schools, therefore larger schools equals less cost
