Effective Communication
Jim perceives himself as an average student. He has already put it in his mind that he is just an average student and no matter how much studying he does he can not manage to get A's in his studies. He also perceives himself as someone who can not be influenced by his friends in any way. He agrees that6 he hangs out with his friends but he is sure that his friends do not influence his grades in any way. He also perceives himself as someone who is not smart as compared to his father. He calls his father a brilliant guy who cruised through college and therefore thinks that college is easy and hence would want his son Jim to get A's. All this Cleary show that Jim sees himself as an average student and no amount of studies can make him achieve what his father wants and expects of him.in short he sees that his father has a high expectation of him which he can not achieve no matter how hard he tries.
Jim's self-concept in this case has an effect on how they interact with his parents. The perception he has of himself is a hindrance to interaction with his parents.as we have seen in the chapter perception consists of three processes selecting, organizing and interpreting. This therefore affects the interaction he has with his parents in that he thinks they are just on his case since he has put it in his mind that he can not do anything about his studies. Mind reading is another factor that affects the interaction between Jim and his parents. Mind reading is making the assumption that we understand what another person thinks or perceives. His parents for instance think that the reason for his poor grades is hanging out with his friends while Jim states clearly that his friends have nothing to do with his grades. Giving our perceptions labels is also another factor that affects perception. Once we give our perception labels there is no way anther person can convince us otherwise and hence one remains with their own perceptions of themselves .in this case Jim has labeled himself as an average student which no one can say anything to convince him otherwise. Therefore self-concept hinders interaction between people in a certain situation.
