Symptoms of Effects of Exposure to Arsenic and Mercury

Mercury is considered as toxic metal causing neurological disorders while Arsenic is considered as a human carcinogen. Mercury mainly affects areas which are associated with the sensory, visual and auditory functions and those concerned with co-ordination. On the other hand, Arsenic exposure results in chronic diseases pertaining to skin tumors, hyper pigmentation and hyperkeratosis of palms. This paper revolves around the explanation of symptoms pertaining to the harmful exposure effects of mercury and arsenic, and also highlights how the symptoms of both differ from each other.

Symptoms of Effects of Exposure to Arsenic and Mercury

Elevated levels of exposure to Mercury and Arsenic cause harmful effects to human health, deteriorating human reproductive and nervous systems. Coal burning power plants emit mercury; home thermometers, "button" batteries, the new energy-saving fluorescent light bulbs, and seafood all are considered as the potential sources of mercury poisoning. Arsenic exposure occurs mostly in areas possessing high natural levels of arsenic, in factories and workplaces where it is a by-product, or in or around hazardous waste locations. The symptoms associated with the exposure of both arsenic and mercury is explained briefly below:

Mercury toxicity comprise of symptoms such as mood swings, nervousness, irritability, other emotional changes, insomnia, headache, abnormal sensations, muscle twitching, tremors, weakness, muscle atrophy, and decreased cognitive functions. These symptoms usually occur with mercury vapor which exist at room temperature. These mercury vapors easily get inhaled into lungs and pass into the blood stream. Mercury vapors have acute health effects on nervous systems, which can cause tremors in tongue and eyelids, which can result in misbalance in walking. High blood pressure, endometriosis, and headaches are also attributed towards the symptoms of mercury poisoning (Keil, et. al, 2011). Ingestion of methyl mercury causes neurological malfunctions, which occurs especially in a fetus and results in impaired neurological development. Several researches suggest that the fetal brain is highly sensitive to methyl mercury, which causes developmental impairments such as reduced ability in thinking, attention span, memory, and most motor skills.
