Poverty has a particularly strong influence on world affairs today and it is especially difficult for particular individuals to survive as long as they do not get involved in activities that very much resemble the form of slavery that was abolished more than 140 years ago. While some might interpret certain jobs to be no different from others, given that they entail individuals doing things they are not particularly fond of, the reality is that these respective jobs involve people being unable to leave and forced to work.
Many people leave their homes because they are poor and hope that they are going to make it in other locations. However, once they actually get there they realize that they are abused and forced to work for little to no compensation. These people are, by definition, slaves, in spite of the fact that the social order has a tendency to regard this particular term as taboo.
In comparison to the African Slave Trade of the 1700s and 1800s, modern day slavery is provided with lesser attention from an international public and it is practically as if it were inexistent. Modern slavery has a covert-focused attitude and it makes it difficult for society to realize that it is actually a threat.
Modern-day slavery does not take people directly from their homes, as it involves strategies that make it difficult for them to realize that they are about to become slaves.
Slavery today is no longer focused on characteristics concerning people being enslaved, as individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds are enslaved with no regard to what race they belong to, their sex, or their age.
3. Thailand is a country where sex trafficking is a common activity as "thousands of uneducated women from impoverished rural villages migrate to Bangkok each year in search of work to support their families" (Bangkok) and this exposes them to a world where the only solution to sustain themselves is to sell their bodies. NightLight started a massive campaign in 2005 with the purpose to provide impoverished women with alternatives to becoming prostitutes. By starting this campaign, the institution practically enabled these women to realize that it was actually possible for them to earn money by doing other activities.
NightLight's actions can serve as an example for other companies from around the world by making them acknowledge that they can actually set up businesses in cities like Bangkok and focus on hiring women who are vulnerable to falling victim to sex trafficking. These companies can even expand this model by getting involved in even more activities and by promoting the idea that human trafficking is wrong and that individuals who are exposed to such environments need to unite in discouraging slave industries.
