One of the major recent controversial topics that have attracted huge debates in the United States is illegal immigration into America. The heated debate in the Congress involved two main political parties i.e. Republicans and Democrats prompting various immigrant supporters to hold peaceful demonstrations in the entire nation. The controversy was exacerbated by the calls for a comprehensive immigration reform approach by the president. The main reason behind the controversy in this topic is the significance of increased immigration for the spiritual and economic health of the United States. With the large number of immigrants in the United States, there is need for comprehensive reforms of the current immigration policies.
The immigration topic has become a subject of huge debate because 1 out of every 9 U.S. residents is an immigrant. In areas where the number of immigrants is growing or high, this debate has attracted an increased intensity. The recent policy debates have mainly focused on who should be allowed in the country rather than how the admitted immigrants will be integrated...
Actually, many people have stated the paradox in the existing policy characterized by a stiff bureaucratic entry system and tolerant integration procedures after entry.
The need for a comprehensive immigration policy review emanates from the threat non-European immigrants pose to the American culture. The other reasons for this need include the fact that immigrants are taking jobs from Americans and depressing the country's wages. On the contrary, the existing immigration policy is supported because of ethical concerns, human rights, and the benefits of cheap foreign labor to companies ("The Immigration Debate," n.d.).
In light of the increased immigration into the United States, one of the major reasons for the review of the current policy is its contribution to a decreasing pressure on wage levels and the lessening of job opportunities in certain economic sectors.
