Machiavelli's approach to government could be found morally and ethically acceptable in utilitarianism because, despite the individual suffering that might occur at the hands of a Machiavellian prince, if this makes the nation as a whole stronger, safer, and more prosperous then the overall good of the prince's actions outweighs the overall (or individual) bad.
Autonomy ethics could condemn Machiavelli's proposed system of ruling because it specifically does not allow individuals to retain any real freedom of choice in society, but rather specifically and explicitly makes the prince the wielder of supreme power, able to cut off choices for any other citizen or individual as he sees fit; the prince is the only one with any autonomy.

Ludwig and Longnecker assert that success can lead to complacency, amongst other things, and from the standpoint of virtue ethics this erodes the morality of these leaders as they become less tied and committed to their own principles, and the intentions of these moral agents become less morally worthy as they stop striving towards the same success.
4)
Virtue ethics asserts that the individual actor is the source of their moral correctness, and basically that their intentions determine their morality, which might at first seem to support Machiavelli's theories but in fact ultimately refutes them as it can be seen that no self-serving intention is ever truly moral.

Macgregor Burns equates empowerment in leadership with an acceptance of personal responsibility in the leader, which can also be seen as an acceptance of autonomy and the moral and ethical obligations that go along with this level of autonomy and self-direction.
6)
The same responsibility that can be seen as the essential moral good in a framework of autonomy ethics can also be seen as the essential good in virtue ethics, as it is through a true and full acceptance of responsibility that one will attempt to develop a virtuous system of morality that leads to greater moral and ethical intentionality in one's actions.
