It is noted that the damage they cause can be direct or indirect. What makes the mealy bugs extremely hard to control is that they reside and implant themselves in areas where insecticides have a hard time reaching and, thus, be effective. There are a number of useful pictures and figures that appear throughout the article. The first picture shows an up-close picture of a citrus mealy bug. The second picture shows an example of a plant with a complex architecture that the mealy bug can use to escape direct contact with pesticides because they are obscured from contact with the pesticide that will kill them. The third figure in the article shows a chart that shows the different pesticides that treat mealy bugs and where the bugs that were killed were located in each instance.
