Mindful Meditation The Researcher Completing Research Proposal

Studies confirm, Singer contends that mindfulness meditation proves effective to help a person manage his/her pain, as well as reduce stress. Even children can reportedly learn to use mindfulness meditation. Jon Kabat-Zinn, director of the University of Massachusetts Medical Center's relaxation program, describes mindfulness meditation:

Mindfulness is about being fully awake in our lives. It is about perceiving the exquisite vividness of each moment. We feel more alive. We also gain immediate access to our own powerful inner resources for insight, transformation, and healing.

Many forms of meditation exist, but they all share the intentional training of a person's attention and concentration. Different forms of meditation have different objects of attention. For example, some forms teach a person to focus attention on a silently repeated mantra, sound, visual image or object, or phrase or question. In mindfulness meditation the individual deliberately maintains a focused attention on the breath as a way to cultivate concentration (Kabat-Zinn, Massion, Hebert, & Rosenbaum, 1998). Consistent daily practice promotes the development of stability, inner calmness, and non-reactivity of the mind. In turn, this allows one to face, and even embrace, all aspects of daily life regardless of pain, anxiety, or fear. The stability and nonreactivity supports one's ability to become a compassionate observer of self as well as others. (Kabat-Zinn, as citend in Singer, 2006, Mindfulness Meditation section, ¶ 1-2)

Meditation Introduction The positive psychology arena has undergone swift expansion in the last ten years, with studies explicitly highlighting the significance of examining processes, conditions, and factors improving wellbeing, facilitating psychological prosperity, and optimizing human functioning (Gable & Haidt, 2005; Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi, 2000). In one study mindfulness-based cognitive therapy was applied to depression patients that had shown a resistance to typical cognitive behavior therapy treatment. The patients were taught mindfulness-based cognitive therapy techniques to disengage the old destructive patterns of thought that held them in a depressed state. Using mindfulness-based cognitive therapy techniques, these patients improved from their previous depression levels

Ever since this time, many in psychological and social science arenas have taken for granted that people go back to a relatively stable happiness set point, even after experiencing apparently life-changing dealings. There have been a rising number of researchers who are questioning whether that set point really exists. Some have recommended that in spite of people's resiliency, they do not inevitably go back to a specific level of happiness.
