Prestigious Leadership Program School

Every individual is influenced by core values that enable him or her to successfully extract meaning and significance from life. A number of my own specific achievements are directly related to attributes I have cultivated in response to the values that are important to me. These attributes are the defining points of my character and have consistently influenced my approach to and success in dealing with life itself. By nature I am analytical, disciplined and responsible, and these strengths have consistently allowed me to overcome obstacles and achieve my goals.

My ability to utilize logic and reason to analyze situations has played a significant part in my academic achievement, and allowed me to succeed in subjects in which others might necessarily not. I have always had the propensity to search for causes in relationship to determine the effects they produce. More importantly, I learned at a young age that it is essential to consider all pertinent factors before coming to an understanding about a particular choice of action. This ability to analyze factors and draw conclusions from them helped me immensely when I was reading Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet as a sophomore. Similar to most of the students in my classroom, I had difficulty comprehending the archaic language. However, by considering the role that each of the characters play in this drama, as well as their motivation and the effects of the actions they produced, I was able to analyze the overall meaning of certain passages -- despite my general difficulty with discerning the denotations of specific words -- and successfully ascertain what was taking place. On my final paper in this subject I was one of the few people in my class to receive an exceedingly high mark, due to the fact that I was able to utilize my prowess for analysis to understand and explain the meaning of several key passages.

The fact that I learned the value of discipline has routinely helped me to accomplish my objectives. As a middle school student, I aspired to participate in a variety of extracurricular activities that either were not offered at, or were not as enjoyable at, my elementary school. My parents and I made an agreement that the only way I could participate in activities as diverse as the soccer team, the multicultural club (I was president), and the school newspaper was if I maintained a grade point average of 3.6 or better. There were several weekends when I would have activities related to all of these extracurricular activities as well as some purely social ones, such as school dances. As someone who has come to rely on structure and routine, I would occasionally have to miss a dance or the opportunity to hang out with my friends in order to complete my studies and my extracurricular obligations. Yet I was one of the few students in my class who never was forced to quit a sport due to poor grades, which is directly attributable to my propensity for discipline.
