There is almost universally found an emphasis placed on continued education. It is also interesting to note that, on the whole, children of immigrant parents tend to perform better in school (based on grade point averages) that native born peers in the same school districts. There is a significant degree of ethnic segmentation of academic achievement -- for example, Chinese students tend to finish high school with the highest grade point averages while Latin American students tended to have the weakest performance in school. The highest drop out rate tended to be seen among Latin American students as well, primarily in Cubans, Dominicans and Mexican-Americans. Unfortunately, those children in situations with the greatest socioeconomic disadvantage tended to have the most unrealistic expectations regarding the possibility of advanced degree and future earning potential. Parental expectation for these students appeared to have a significant impact on whether or not the children hoped to attend schooling after high school, with 85% of those reporting that parents wanted them to attain advanced degrees hoped to do so.
Data on these children, now into their early adulthood continues to be collected. So far, the data collected seems to put paid to previous prejudices and ideas surrounding the status and fate of immigrants and their children…
