Part of the principal's position in the community is to engage community leaders, parents, politicians, and organizers. As a liaison between the school board, educators, and residents, the principal represents the school. The school plays a central role in the community, extending beyond that of the education of students. As Berg, Melaville & Blank (2006) point out, the role of principals has changed dramatically over the last several generations. Principals used to be invisible members of the community as their focus was within the walls of the school itself. After school, a child is engaged with family, friends, and social activities.
