Management in the prison is a unique challenge, because of the many responsibilities that come with it. It is clear, just as business management and leadership are evolving, that prison management will continue to evolve, and as it does, it could create model prison systems of the future.
Finally, it is important to note that prisons are unique operations, but they still should uphold management principles. Author Daly continues, "Management is responsible for the mission and strategy of the organization. Prisons are unique with special features but they still reflect the philosophy and methodology of management" (Daly, 2002). Prison management should have clearly defined goals and missions regarding their inmate populations, but they should have the same for their staff members, as well. Studies indicate that effective prison management leads to safer, healthier prisons, and lead to less inmate dissatisfaction. Poor management jeopardizes inmates and institutional personnel, so good prison management are essential in the criminal justice community.
