My final recommendation was that the parents and Adam's teachers should work as a team to help Adam manage his condition. In other words, the parents should communicate with the teachers to determine if the interventions have been effective. While drug interventions for ADHD, especially in children, have been increasingly controversial because of their possible side-effects, their main advantage is the speed and efficacy with which they work. Those who have benefited reported that the effects were almost immediately visible, on the same day the drug was used.

On the other hand, drug therapies for any mental disorder have been imperfect and frequently plagued by side-effects and non-compliance. Continuous research is therefore necessary to improve not only drug therapies and identify potential harmful effects in the long-term, but also to find possible alternatives to drug therapy.

It should, however, be recognized that no therapy is perfect and that the combination of therapies will often have to be modified at least once to determine the most effective course of action. It is also vital to engage in critical thinking when faced with fanatical critics of any intervention methods. The fact remains that each child is unique and will display unique responses to any intervention.
