A paraphrasing is the method that writers can employ to avoid plagiarism, and one of the challenges that many writers face when completing their course works is the method of paraphrasing without falling into plagiarism.

Objective of this paper is to discuss the strategy of presenting the scholarly writing without falling into plagiarism. The paper also paraphrases part of the contents from the paper of O'Conner, (2003).

Method of Presenting Scholarly Writing, Paraphrasing and Plagiarism

A paraphrasing is the method of correctly rewrite the contents of another writers using your own words, which correctly reflect the original contents. The paraphrase also refers to the method of correctly reference the works of other writers after rewriting the contents in order to avoid the plagiarism in a scholarly writing. In all accredited universities in the advanced countries, plagiarism is a criminal offense where penalty of the offence can range from suspension to termination from the university.

"Paraphrasing, somewhat different from retelling and summarizing, helps students monitor their understanding and incorporate new knowledge with what they already know about a topic. Paraphrasing helps students realize that comprehension is the goal of reading." (Sharon, 2009 p 73).

Different strategies students can employ in developing a scholarly writing with zero plagiarism.

First, students should learn to use synonyms. The synonyms is the use of another words that reflect the same meaning of the original contents. Typically, synonyms are the effective way of paraphrasing, which assists a writer to rewrite the original contents in another words similar to the original contents without falling into a plagiarism.

Another paraphrasing strategy is to break a long sentence into a shorter sentence. The method is by reading the entire document and write the document in your own words using shorter sentences. The strategy will assist students to avoid using the same words in the original contents. Sharon, (2009) points out that:

Moreover, writers are advisable to check their writing with a plagiarism software to ensure that their writing is free plagiarism. After completing a scholarly writing, students or research writers should use the Turnitin software to check the originality of their research papers. One of the advantages of Turnitin is that it will highlight where the researchers have plagiarized with yellow or red color. By using the software, the students will be able to identify plagiarized contents in their works and eliminate the plagiarism by rewriting the contents or deleting contents from the original contents.

More importantly, students should follow a writing guideline in the Online Writing Lab of Purdue University. The guidelines can assist students and other researchers to deliver scholarly writing without falling into a plagiarism. The guideline in the writing lab can also guide students on the appropriate strategy to paraphrase the contents of other writers without plagiarized.
