Fire prevention management refers to a field with an incredibly broad scope.  It encompasses any behaviors aimed at helping reduce or prevent the risk of fire.  It can apply to commercial, residential, industrial, and even natural settings.  In addition to looking at fire safety technology, it also looks at human factors that can contribute to the risk of fire. Developing a good fire prevention management plan involves looking at your physical setting, the natural factors, and the human factors that can impact the risk of fire safety and dictate what types of interventions would be required to help extinguish that fire.

OSHA has very specific requirements for fire safety plans in employment settings.  From a technical standpoint, if a workplace has more than 10 employees, it must:

  • Be in writing
  • Kept in the workplace
  • Available to employees for review

For smaller workplaces, the fire prevention plans can be given orally.

A good fire prevention plan examines the hazards. Hazards can include potential ignition sources, hazardous or flammable materials, the type of fire protection equipment required to handle those risks, and the type of fire protection currently installed to help mitigate those risks.  The plan also looks at what types of procedures are in place for handling risky material, such as hazardous, flammable, and combustible material.  In addition, it looks at the procedures in place in the event of fire.  The plan also has to look at accountability.  Who is in charge of handling storage and maintenance of hazardous materials, storage and maintenance of firefighting materials, or responding to fire hazards?

An employer must inform employees upon initial assignment to a job of the fire hazards to which they are exposed. An employer must also review with each employee those parts of the fire prevention plan necessary for self-protection. [29 CFR 1910.39(d)]
