This paper examines the philosophy, mission, and vision of the American Red Cross, noting that while these are not formally consolidated into a single public statement, they are revealed through the organization's actions and institutional structure. The paper explores how the overarching philosophy of safeguarding public health is operationalized across 769 regional chapters, each chartered by a national Board of Governors. It also analyzes the biomedical services division's distinct mission and vision statements, which emphasize safe, reliable, and cost-effective blood, plasma, and tissue services delivered through voluntary donation and a commitment to quality, efficiency, and best practices in medicine and research.
Despite the fact that the American Red Cross has not clearly stated a single consolidated philosophy, mission, vision, or set of values, these are implicitly revealed by the institution's actions and efforts. It is therefore safe to state that the overarching philosophy of the organization is that of safeguarding the health of American citizens. A more particular means of achieving this goal is convincing communities that donating blood is their moral obligation.
This philosophy is in place at all 769 regional or city-based chapters of the American Red Cross. Each chapter is chartered by the national Board of Governors. Each individual chapter is allocated its own budget and has the ability to decide which programs are best implemented at its regional level (Grabianowski).
Due to the complexity of its operations, different philosophies, mission statements, and vision statements are associated with the American Red Cross. Its biomedical services division, for instance, promotes a mission statement focused on fulfilling the needs of the American people for the safest, most reliable, and most cost-effective blood, plasma, and tissue services through voluntary donations. The mission of the blood services division is specifically to be a preeminent provider of biomedical products and services that meet customer and regulatory expectations for quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
