This reflection paper explores the personal experiences and values that have shaped one student's career ambitions and sense of identity. Beginning with volunteer work as a YMCA camp counselor, the author describes how early exposure to youth sports management sparked a desire to restore integrity to a field they see as increasingly troubled. The paper also examines the profound influence of the author's mother as a role model of perseverance and moral character, before turning to the significance of African American heritage in forming a strong sense of self, cultural pride, and resilience in the face of racism.
One of the most meaningful experiences of my life has been my work as a volunteer camp counselor. I participated in the YMCA program as a way to fulfill my required volunteer hours for graduation. While it started out as a requirement, it soon became something I genuinely enjoyed, and I discovered that I was good at it.
That experience led me to choose the field I want to work in: sports management. My summers at the YMCA camp gave me the opportunity to guide children through various sporting activities. Whether it was baseball, basketball, or other pursuits, I felt I was contributing something meaningful to their lives by introducing them to the concepts of sportsmanship and teamwork. It was rewarding to help resolve the conflicts that would arise.
Sports management is a field that, in my opinion, needs integrity restored to it. With million-dollar contracts, athletes violating laws, and other issues that the media has brought to public attention, sports have gone from being an all-American institution to something people gossip about. I plan to help bring integrity back to the field. I will develop my career on the foundation of higher education and the values and principles I hold dear. I believe sports management is the key to revitalizing the respect once held for sports and their stars. I look forward to the travel, the high-level negotiating, and the opportunity to reach ambitious goals that this field will provide. I have always been involved in sports in one capacity or another, but my time as a YMCA sports counselor gave me a first glimpse into the world of managing players.
The biggest influence in my life — in all areas, including my career goals — is my mother. She has taught me by her own example that it is possible to lead one's life with integrity, strong values, and success. She is a believer in higher education and has pushed me to do my best in everything I try. My mother is my biggest supporter, but it is not blind encouragement. She works hard, both as a parent and as a friend, to guide me through these vital years of adult decision-making.
She is proud of my accomplishments and has always been there to nudge me to reach just a little further each time, so that I continue to grow and achieve my goals. Watching her as she raised me gave me the foundation for holding high morals and standards for myself. These traits have served me well, and my mother is the person I credit with instilling them in me. One of the most important things she taught me is to be proud of who I am and to use that pride to help others be proud of who they are.
