This paper examines the multifaceted role of digital media in contemporary life from a personal perspective. The author explores how social networking platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram have transformed personal communication, enabling connection across geographic distances and supporting self-esteem. The paper also considers digital media's professional applications, particularly in job searching and career networking. Finally, it analyzes how social media shapes youth culture — influencing language, communication habits, and interpersonal norms — including the rise of abbreviations, condensed writing styles, and selective social engagement among younger generations.
The internet has made it possible for information to travel faster across the globe, effectively making the world a small, connected village. Digital media has drastically changed how we communicate and interact with each other, particularly with the increasing popularity of social media networks such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram. Before the invention of social media, our means of interacting with others were limited, and we were largely restricted to engaging with people we knew in person. There were challenges that members of Generation X and Generation Y had to navigate that Millennials and those born after the rise of the internet do not — waiting a week or more for photographs to be developed, or waiting weeks for a letter to arrive by mail.
The internet, and social media in particular, has fundamentally changed the way people conduct their activities, interact, and communicate. It has influenced our personal lives just as much as our professional and business lives. This paper examines how digital media has changed my personal and professional life, and how it continues to shape youth culture — a culture of which I am a part.
One of the greatest benefits of social media is its ability to keep me connected with friends and loved ones regardless of geographical boundaries. These platforms make it possible for me to share exciting news and details about my day through videos, pictures, and status updates. This gives family living miles away a chance to be part of my life without the need for long-distance phone calls or expensive travel. For me, Facebook is the best platform for this purpose, combining videos, photos, and status updates to help people share their lives with others. In simple terms, social media helps keep family and friends together and present in each other's lives, even when they are separated by great distances.
Social media networks also offer valuable platforms for people to network and develop a sense of belonging when they move to new locations. In this age of globalization, geographical boundaries are losing significance, and people increasingly work and conduct business outside their home communities. I can relate to this personally — there was a time when my family had to move to a new state due to work-related commitments. It was difficult leaving all my childhood friends behind and starting over in a new environment, a new school, and an entirely different neighborhood. Social media networks, however, made the process of building a new social circle much easier. By using hashtags for my new city and school on Twitter, I was able to connect instantly with people discussing or sharing information about my new place of residence. This gave me a sense of belonging and made it possible for me to engage with others on issues affecting my new community.
On a personal level, I also feel that social media does a great deal to boost my self-esteem. Subrahmanyam and Smahel (2010) demonstrated in their analysis that, in line with the social compensation hypothesis, people with self-esteem issues can use social media platforms to compensate for their shortcomings — making friends and self-disclosing in ways that would otherwise not be possible. Supporting this argument, Shackford (2011) posits that such sites allow less socially adept individuals to put their best face forward: they can reveal only those aspects of themselves that they feel reflect positively, while filtering anything that may reflect badly. Moreover, feedback from friends and followers posted publicly on one's profile tends to be positive, which provides a further boost to self-esteem.
My use of digital media is, however, not without negative consequences. I feel that my increased reliance on social media and computer-mediated communication has had a negative impact on my social skills. Because of this dependency, I find it increasingly difficult to interact with people in person or sustain a normal face-to-face conversation.
Digital media provides platforms through which individuals can establish a professional presence and reputation (Ferriden, Ramsden & Sheninger, 2012). LinkedIn, for instance, played a significant role in helping me secure my current job. I built a profile that allowed me to connect with hiring managers in my field, and even after receiving an interview invitation, I used the platform to network with professionals both inside and outside the organization. This helped me understand what the interview process would be like, what kinds of questions to expect, and what working for the company would entail.
"Networking, job searching, and career growth"
"Language shifts, abbreviations, and social norms"
Digital media has changed our lives in immense ways at both the personal and professional levels. We are able to communicate easily and conveniently with family and friends who live miles away. Moreover, those who matter most to us are able to play an active role in our lives and share in our most memorable moments through the photos, videos, and updates we share on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Such sites also help to build self-esteem, as individuals tend to share only those updates and photos that present them in a positive light. At the professional level, digital media allows people to connect and network with experts and professionals in their respective fields, opening up learning opportunities and expanding possibilities for career growth. Finally, digital media does a great deal to shape our culture — our language, beliefs, norms, and modes of interaction are all influenced, to a significant degree, by social media. From a personal perspective, digital media does much to develop individuals and enrich the cultures they belong to.
