Introduction: What Is Falsifiability?
For a theory to be scientifically valid, it must be testable. The criteria for testability include a theory's capability of being proven both wrong and correct by means of an experiment structured upon the principles of the scientific method. This idea of testability is at the core of the concept of falsifiability. The need for a theory to be subject to the principle of falsifiability is one reason that control groups are used in scientific experiments. For example, a teacher could give every child candy before a test and assert that the candy was the reason the children did poorly. Without a control group — children who did not eat candy — there is no way to prove the hypothesis wrong by determining whether those children performed just as poorly. In contrast, if an experiment with a control group demonstrated universally poor scores, this would suggest that other causes were at the root of the students' poor performance. The theory that candy caused the poor scores could thus be falsified.
Historical Pseudoscience and the Absence of Falsifiability
Many scientifically dubious practices were used in the past precisely because they were never subject to tests that allowed for falsifiability. For example, when individuals were "blood let" for illnesses, sometimes they recovered and sometimes they died. Doctors who defended bloodletting claimed that their treatment was responsible when patients improved, and that patients who died would have died regardless. We now know that bloodletting is dangerous for most illnesses and that survivors recovered despite, not because of, the treatment. Yet for a long time, bloodletting was such a common medical practice that it was never subjected to empirical validation (Marian, 2008).
Popper's Critique of Psychoanalysis
It might be assumed that such medieval folk wisdom is confined to the past. Yet some individuals assert that psychology as a discipline lacks scientific falsifiability and is therefore no science at all (Lutus, 2009). One of the philosopher Karl Popper's most pointed critiques of psychoanalysis was its lack of scientific verifiability — the fact that an explanation could not be tested and thus "always fit" the patient's condition, since it could be neither proved true nor untrue.
Popper described his concerns using a personal anecdote involving Alfred Adler:
"The Freudian analysts emphasized that their theories were constantly verified by their 'clinical observations'. As for Adler, I was much impressed by a personal experience. Once, in 1919, I reported to him a case which to me did not seem particularly Adlerian, but which he found no difficulty in analyzing in terms of his theory of inferiority feelings, although he had not even seen the child. Slightly shocked, I asked him how he could be so sure. 'Because of my thousand-fold experience,' he replied; whereupon I could not help saying: 'And with this new case, I suppose, your experience has become thousand-and-onefold.'… they [the theories] always fitted, that they were always confirmed… it began to dawn on me that this apparent strength was in fact their weakness." (Popper, 1953, p. 2)
This universal "explain-ability" is also seen in astrology, where a vague prediction of future events is offered by a prognosticator. The theory can be neither proven nor disproven; the statement is so broad it can be made to conform to almost any sequence of events. Astrology is not a science because its theories cannot be empirically tested, any more than an aesthetic judgment about a literary text can be proven or disproven.
The problem is compounded in psychology by the fact that even the experimenter's subjective impressions can influence perceptions of the outcome. Freudian theories do not pertain to anything testable, external, or objectively "real." It is possible, according to Popper, that an individual might hate his or her mother due to repressed feelings, or to an inferiority complex, or to any number of other reasons. Freudian psychology renders the human mind just as subjective and interpretable as a literary text. That is perhaps why, given psychology's aspirations as a science, Freud is now more often studied in literature classes than in psychology classes. A study published in the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association conducted a computer-based analysis of course descriptions at 150 highly ranked public and private institutions and "found that of the 1,175 courses that referenced psychoanalysis, more than 86% were offered outside psychology departments" (Cohen, 2007).
Conclusion: Falsifiability as a Scientific Standard
"To be falsifiable a theory must have two properties. It must provide a way to determine the status of its theoretical entities… it must say how those theoretical entities interact and explain various events" (Good and Bad Theories, 2007). Psychology is a discipline that encompasses both biology and anecdotal evidence. It is both research-based and hands-on in clinical settings, where therapists may tailor their approach to the needs of the individual client rather than to a fixed theory. It may not always be possible — or even desirable — for clinicians to apply falsifiability criteria to every technique they use with patients. Nevertheless, the examination of falsifiable scientific theories remains essential for understanding how the biology of the brain works, evaluating the efficacy of psychotropic drugs, and assessing the validity of clinical treatments.
