Abstract

This paper evaluates Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), one of the largest for-profit healthcare systems in the United States, and its readiness to address citizens' healthcare needs over the next decade. The analysis examines key operational areas including patient satisfaction, resource management, nurse staffing shortages, and network growth. Drawing on HCA's financial data for 2017–2018, the paper assesses how effectively the organization manages its assets and workforce. The paper also draws comparative lessons from Singapore Airlines, exploring how change management, employee retention, and workforce diversity inform strategic decision-making for both organizations.

✍️ How to write this paper — guide, tools & examples ▾

What makes this paper effective

  • Grounds its strategic analysis in concrete financial metrics, specifically HCA's return on assets ratios for 2017 and 2018, giving the argument measurable support.
  • Uses the Singapore Airlines case as a comparative lens to extract practical lessons about change management and human resources, adding analytical depth beyond a single-company profile.
  • Connects workforce strategy to competitive advantage in a clear causal chain: motivated employees → patient care quality → organizational goal attainment.

Key academic technique demonstrated

The paper demonstrates applied comparative analysis — placing two organizations from different industries side by side to draw transferable strategic lessons. Rather than treating the comparison as superficial, the author identifies specific shared principles (valuing human capital, managing change deliberately) and distinguishes where each organization excels, producing actionable takeaways for both.

Structure breakdown

The paper opens with a brief introduction establishing HCA's profile and the paper's purpose. It then moves through four substantive areas — patient satisfaction, financial/resource management, nurse staffing, and the Singapore Airlines comparison — before closing with a short discussion of workforce diversity. Citations are drawn from corporate sources, a business textbook, and a news article, reflecting an undergraduate business or healthcare management course assignment.

Introduction

Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) is not only one of the country's largest hospital companies, but also one of the most notable healthcare services providers in the United States. At present, HCA manages more than 170 healthcare facilities offering a wide range of services across the nation. This for-profit organization is headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee. To remain relevant in the increasingly dynamic healthcare industry, organizations such as HCA must have the relevant strategies in place to address the various needs of citizens going forward. This paper assesses the readiness of HCA to address the healthcare needs of citizens in the next decade. It also compares HCA to Singapore Airlines in an attempt to evaluate its readiness to tackle inherent marketplace challenges.

HCA's Core Operations and Strategic Challenges

HCA operates outpatient healthcare facilities, psychiatric hospitals, acute care hospitals, and general facilities that offer a wide range of services including, but not limited to, emergency services, diagnostic services, cardiac care services, and therapeutic programs (Yahoo Finance, 2019). To continue addressing the healthcare needs of citizens going forward, HCA must not only capitalize on the opportunities available in the healthcare industry, but also navigate emerging challenges within it. Some of the key issues HCA must address pertain to patient satisfaction, resource management, nurse staffing, and network growth.

When it comes to patient satisfaction, the organization points out that its focus — as far as caring is concerned — extends to both its patients and its members of staff (HCA, 2019). It further notes that it provides the necessary support to its employees to successfully execute their core mandate. In essence, employees are the most important resource any organization has, given that they are charged with the actual realization of organizational goals and objectives. A motivated workforce is therefore likely to be more dedicated. Towards this end, HCA employees are likely to continue diligently executing their roles so as to help the organization attain its overall objective of "delivering outstanding patient care" (HCA, 2019).

Resource Management and Financial Performance

On the resource management front, it is useful to evaluate the organization's return on assets (ROA) ratio in order to determine how effectively management is utilizing available assets to generate returns. Using the organization's most recent financials, its ROA — computed by dividing HCA's net income by its total assets — stands at 0.06 and 0.10 for 2017 and 2018, respectively. The organization's ability to utilize assets to generate returns therefore improved within the two years under consideration. If this trend is maintained, HCA is likely to further enhance its resource management capabilities over time — a factor that could serve as a source of competitive advantage.

It is also important to note that with proper utilization of resources, the organization will be in a stronger position to exploit emerging opportunities in the healthcare marketplace and further grow its network. Within the two years under consideration, HCA was able to grow its total revenue by 7.9 percent — from $16.2 billion in 2017 to $17.5 billion in 2018.
