Introduction
Health and physical education (HPE) is necessary for school-going children's physical and mental development. It has proven valuable for increasing social cohesion, social responsibility, and interactional skills, leading to higher academic performance and discipline (Smith et al., 2021). This paper observes an HPE session's class activities and critically analyzes the learning outcomes, student engagement, and further recommendations where required.
The observed lesson was an HPE hockey session for Year 10 students. The learning intention was to provide students with the opportunity to collaboratively use (attack) and deny (defend) space. Three activities were conducted:
i. Kaleidoscope (warm-up): Students worked in small groups and reacted to a stimulus — a whistle — to deny or confine the opposition team as quickly as possible.
ii. Lines (warm-up): This activity had two stages. First, students worked in pairs to communicate and defend or deny a specified area. In the second stage, more players were added to extend communication, strengthen core defense, and practice deny gameplay.
iii. Cone-based activity (main task): Students physically applied their knowledge of denying and using space within a targeted area. They also communicated to pass balls within a designated space marked by cones.
Learning Outcomes
The collective learning outcomes of the three activities were:
• Physical and communication-based coordination among players
• Passing the ball with control to teammates
• Effectively learning to defend the ball from opponents
• Strategies to outwit rivals by stopping and passing the ball tactfully within a given space
• Developing quick decision-making skills through passing and defending within the boundaries of a small space
• Demonstrating quickness in understanding game rules
• Changing direction with speed
• Showing mastery of hockey under pressure
• Learning to play as a team — in both warm-up and main tasks — and recognizing that success is collective, not only individual
These learning outcomes are clearly reflected in the warm-up and main activities of the observed session. Hockey is a small-ball game whose aim is to retain the ball within the team's own space and not surrender it until maximum goals are scored (Saputri & Suharjana, 2020). The same command over ball control was taught in the observed lesson, with the standards of physical activity maintained throughout. Hockey is also recognized as one of the most effective games for enhancing cardiovascular fitness and is considered beneficial for anaerobic intensity (Nathan, 2017). Physical intensity is increased, providing greater resilience through improved heart rate and oxygen consumption. Furthermore, the complex tasks involved in hockey align closely with the observed session's learning outcomes — including improved cognition with quick player response, simultaneous ball control, rapid decision-making with better working memory, and positive cognitive outcomes (Malcolm et al., 2022).
Learning Content
The learning content of the observed activities involved whistles, lines, and cones. The whistle was used to teach players to respond promptly to a stimulus — acting instantly to play defense or deny against the opponent. Lines portrayed the strategy of facing one another and passing the ball between each other to improve coordination. Cones were used to encourage ball control within a specifically defined space while simultaneously developing hand-eye coordination. Passing the ball quickly with twists and turns is easily practiced through this type of activity.
In line with the evidence, lines are carefully used in hockey to teach players defensive tactics, attacking with speed, pressure management while carrying the ball, and advancing with the risk of playing within a given space (Lord et al., 2022). These processes were clearly visible in the observed warm-up sessions. Research has also confirmed that visual and auditory responses are affected by physical exercise; a fast reaction to a stimulus such as a whistle in hockey reflects a player's speed of performance (Rahman & Islam, 2021). Furthermore, cones are valuable in encouraging control and shooting skills among learners, as passing and turning the ball between closely or distantly placed cones requires controlling the ball within a pre-set space (Brocken et al., 2021). The swiftness required to pass the ball to a teammate when competing against another team is a skill developed through spontaneous ball-passing techniques taught with the help of cones.
Conclusion
A set of warm-up and main activities were observed for Year 10 students who were taught to defend and deny spaces in the hockey game. Certain pedagogies were seen playing their part during the instructional class on the field, helping illuminate how models and HPE attributes known for integrating physical, cognitive, and social skills are applied in practice. The lesson was found to effectively fulfill the main criteria of PE instruction and meet the stated learning outcomes; however, student engagement remains a concern. A recommendation for improving engagement has been presented in the form of an evidence-based intervention — Acceptance and Commitment Training — which has demonstrated positive results for students' psychological development, and is therefore conducive to higher student engagement and better sports performance.
