The Human Microbiome

Microbiomes are present in abundant quantities in the gastrointestinal tract, gut, nasal cavities, respiratory tract, and on the skin (Ogunrinola et al., 2020). They have adapted to the workings of the human body without being adversely affected by those adaptations. They are the inhabitants and facilitators of complex interactions within the human body and are even referred to as major components of genomic organisms (Ogunrinola et al., 2020). Through their particular colonization patterns, they form a discrete ecosystem that has adjusted to the internal environmental conditions unique to every individual (Ogunrinola et al., 2020).

Every individual's microbiome is distinctive because lifestyle patterns, diet, nutrition, inherited genes, and the body's responses to disease all differ from person to person (Ogunrinola et al., 2020). The workings of microbiomes define a unique pattern for underlying diseases: at any given point in time, microbiome alterations can trigger transformations that may eventually manifest as chronic or life-threatening conditions (Ogunrinola et al., 2020).
