This knowledge can help us develop new treatments for diseases and create policies that protect the rights of all people, regardless of their ancestry. In a world that is increasingly divided, the "one humanity, many genomes" project is a powerful reminder of our common humanity.

Types of Genetic Variation

What makes our genome unique? One example is sequence variation: small differences in the order of the nucleotides that make up our DNA. These variations can affect the way a gene is expressed and, as a result, influence phenotypic traits like hair and eye color. Another form of variation is copy number variation (CNV), which refers to differences in the number of copies of a particular gene. CNV can also impact phenotypic traits and has been linked to conditions such as autism and cancer (Mills et al., 2011).

What was once a vast and mysterious territory is now being mapped in ever-greater detail, opening up new possibilities for medical research and treatment. Understanding our genomes impacts our personal lives in significant ways. Recent advances in sequencing technology have made it possible to cheaply and easily determine the sequence of an individual's genome. As a result, many people are now choosing to have their genomes sequenced in order to learn more about their personal risk factors for disease, their likelihood of passing certain traits on to their children, and even their ancestral history.

Indeed, most people who have had their genomes sequenced report feeling empowered by the knowledge and feel better equipped to make informed decisions about their health (Wade et al., 2013). As we learn more about the role of genetics in disease, sequencing is likely to become increasingly commonplace, providing valuable insights into our own health and that of our families. Resources such as the National Institutes of Health's genomics initiatives continue to support this growing field.
