This reflective essay explores a student's decision to double-major in music production and business, drawing on a passion for music, the advantages of living in Southern California's entertainment hub, and the economic resilience of the music industry. The second half examines the student's most significant community contributions, including voter-registration canvassing with the NAACP Youth Council, food drives for the homeless, care-package campaigns for deployed military personnel, and coat collections for children in need. Together, the two sections illustrate how personal interest, strategic career planning, and civic engagement can reinforce one another.
I think it is important to choose a college major based on your own likes and dislikes while also considering which industries are performing well in the broader economy. My college major is twofold: music production and business. I believe that a background in business is valuable for virtually any career path. My decision to pursue music production was shaped by several key factors. First, living in Southern California — the movie and recording capital of the world — had a significant impact on my choice. I realized that potential business opportunities in the entertainment field would be easier to find here than almost anywhere else.
I also believe it is important to choose a career centered on something you genuinely enjoy. I have always loved music, and building a career around some aspect of the music industry is deeply appealing to me. The entertainment industry, and music in particular, tends to remain popular even during periods of economic hardship, providing people with an escape from everyday stress. Because nearly everyone enjoys some form of music, the industry continues to grow, and the financial rewards for someone with a strong understanding of what drives it are considerable. Having the right professional contacts is equally important.
What I envision for my future is eventually branching out into other areas of the entertainment world — most notably, film directing. Co-majoring in business will give me the foundational skills needed to establish my career and work steadily toward that broader goal. The combination of creative expertise in music production and practical knowledge in business creates a versatile platform that I can adapt as the industry evolves.
Southern California's concentration of studios, labels, and production companies makes it an ideal environment for building those connections early. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, careers in music and the performing arts are highly competitive, making both formal education and real-world networking essential for long-term success.
I believe my most significant contribution to my local community is my willingness to engage in a variety of activities that create a positive impact. Being available to multiple organizations means that several different groups know they can count on my support, which benefits the community as a whole.
I am a member of the NAACP Youth Council and have participated in several community events. Even though I am not yet eligible to vote, I was instrumental in motivating others to exercise their right to vote by canvassing neighborhoods and attending rallies. I believe these efforts encouraged people to take a more active role in civic life.
In addition, I am active in a youth ministry focused on feeding the hungry. I have participated in collecting and organizing food for homeless individuals in the area. This effort matters because it provides those who are less fortunate with a basic necessity, and it brings together people from many different walks of life to make a difference in their own neighborhoods.
