Its growth has been marked by resilience and a spirit of continuous renewal, even in the face of daunting challenges. The church overcame a catastrophic fire in 1991, an event that symbolizes its enduring spirit and commitment to its foundational values. Under the stewardship of its pastor, the church's ethos is a testament to its adaptability and dedication — an ethos that has embraced both traditional and contemporary methods. The church has risen to every challenge, most recently the COVID-19 pandemic, by creating a dynamic community both online and in person.
In my role as a Chaplain at Trinity United Methodist Church, I find myself deeply intertwined with these values. Research Question and Methods
The guiding question for this study is: "How can Trinity United Methodist Church more effectively utilize the principles of narrative psychology to foster a deeper sense of love and belonging among its members?" This question acknowledges the complexity of pastoral care and its profound impact on the innermost yearnings for connection and purpose.1
To explore this question, I applied ethnographic research methods, including qualitative interviews and direct observation.2 This approach was chosen for its effectiveness in capturing the profound, personal narratives crucial for understanding the role of storytelling in spiritual development.3 Through interviews with members of the congregation and church leaders, I aimed to gather personal stories and insights into the effectiveness of current practices in communicating the theological story of love. Direct observation of church practices and community dynamics provided a lens through which to view the integration of personal and spiritual narratives.
Motivation for the Study
This study is driven by a fascination with the intersection of narrative psychology and theology, especially within the church community. My personal theology, centered around the concepts of God's universal love and the transformative power of communal narratives, strongly motivates this research. I began this study with the expectation of uncovering patterns and insights into how individual spiritual journeys and community dynamics intertwine through storytelling.
