This paper examines the ongoing debate over nuclear energy as a clean and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. Introduction

The modern world has been characterized by several environmental issues in recent decades, including natural resource depletion, climate change, pollution, and overpopulation. Climate change has attracted significant attention because of the increased environmental impact of industrialization and globalization. It is largely attributable to current energy sources, which continue to damage the environment. As a result, the search for a suitable energy source with little to no environmental impact has become a major issue for policymakers, governments, and environmentalists. Despite conventional views that nuclear power is unsuitable, recent studies and statistics have considered it a clean energy source, contributing to arguments and counter-arguments about whether nuclear energy is truly clean and safe. Despite having little to no emission of dangerous gases, nuclear energy is unsustainable when considered from an economic and social perspective.

The Case for Nuclear Energy

In the past few years, nuclear energy has received considerable attention as efforts to identify clean, safe, and green energy sources have intensified. Environmentalists, governments, and policymakers are increasingly looking for suitable alternatives to fossil fuels such as natural gas and coal. Nuclear energy has increasingly been regarded as a necessary and suitable alternative in a world that is constantly energy-constrained (Totty, 2008). One of the primary arguments supporting nuclear energy is its environmentally friendly emissions profile. Conventional energy sources are associated with the emission of greenhouse gases through burning fossil fuels to generate power, which contributes to global climate change. Unlike these conventional sources, nuclear power plants do not emit carbon dioxide, sulfur, or mercury. When considering full life-cycle emissions — including fuel shipping, uranium mining, and waste management — nuclear energy emits carbon dioxide at levels comparable to hydroelectric and wind power, and less than solar power. Therefore, using nuclear energy could help achieve targeted emission levels and address climate change effectively.

Secondly, nuclear energy enjoys significant advantages over other energy sources considered environmentally friendly. From an economic perspective, nuclear reactors have the capability to power large industrial societies at their current stage of technological development (Koffler, 2008). Although wind and solar power are environmentally friendly, they are considerably less efficient than nuclear energy in their ability to power large industrial societies. The other alternative energy sources would require enormous government investment to be set up in a way that effectively meets current energy needs. Moreover, given the lack of new nuclear power plants being built worldwide, existing nuclear energy is relatively inexpensive and capable of meeting global energy needs efficiently. Nuclear energy therefore makes economic sense as an affordable and environmentally friendly option compared to other alternatives.

The third argument supporting nuclear energy concerns the limitations of alternatives such as wind and solar power. While these sources are environmentally friendly and have potential to address global climate change, they are considerably limited compared to nuclear energy. Currently, wind accounts for approximately 1% of global energy and solar power for less than 1%. Relying on these sources as the primary alternatives to conventional energy would not effectively meet existing global energy needs. Nuclear energy can meet current global energy demands around the clock — 24 hours a day — whereas solar and wind cannot. The intermittent nature of wind and solar power, despite their lower cost, makes them flawed alternatives to carbon-emitting energy sources, and nuclear energy arguably fits the bill for current energy demands better than any other alternative.

The final argument used to demonstrate nuclear energy's suitability is safety. While there have been nuclear power plant accidents in recent decades, nuclear power technology is largely safe, since reactors are designed to minimize the likelihood of a meltdown. The current state of nuclear technology implies that the probability of a serious accident is very low, as demonstrated by probabilistic risk assessment. This suggests that nuclear energy is relatively safe and that its use would generate considerable environmental benefits compared to conventional energy sources.

The Case Against Nuclear Energy

While proponents have raised various arguments in favor of nuclear energy, opponents have challenged them on several fronts. The case against nuclear energy rests primarily on economics and safety — the latter being a major social concern. From an economic perspective, opponents argue that developing and funding a new nuclear power plant is extremely expensive, making nuclear energy uneconomical compared to other power sources (Totty, 2008). The high costs of construction and maintenance have contributed to the fact that no major new plant has been developed in recent years despite increased interest in nuclear power. Using nuclear energy to address climate change would impose enormous financial burdens on governments and taxpayers.

Secondly, opponents challenge the claim that nuclear energy is safe and clean, arguing that the safety of nuclear power plants is unreliable due to the ever-present risk of accidents. Public opinion on nuclear energy has largely been shaped by plant accidents and incidents, which have had considerable impacts on energy policies worldwide. The devastating effects of accidents such as Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and Fukushima have demonstrated that nuclear energy is not entirely safe. Even though nuclear reactors have been redesigned, additional safety features added, and personnel training enhanced, safety concerns continue to cloud consideration of nuclear energy as a reliable source of power.

Third, the long-term disposal of nuclear waste is a major problem at the center of the case against nuclear power. Environmental experts suggest that the most suitable method of nuclear waste disposal is deep underground burial, preventing radioactive materials from entering the environment. However, the lack of adequate deep repositories and suitable sites for burying nuclear waste remains a significant challenge. Furthermore, the technology required to render radioactive waste inert and harmless has not yet been perfected, though it exists in prototype form (Koffler, 2008). The impact of radioactive waste on the environment does little to strengthen the case for nuclear energy, as evidenced by the long-term aftermath of major nuclear accidents.

Opponents have also argued that nuclear energy could lead to the proliferation of nuclear weapons, generating significant risks to global security. Nuclear power plants that utilize uranium can potentially be used to create nuclear weapons, implying that nuclear energy could generate greater security risks than the environmental problems it might solve. Potentially hostile nations are likely to exploit radioactive materials from nuclear power plants to create atomic weapons capable of mass destruction. Given the importance of non-proliferation efforts in a world facing evolving security threats, nuclear energy cannot be considered fully safe despite its potential to address global warming.
