This personal statement for a pharmacy school application addresses three interconnected themes: the applicant's reasons for choosing a particular pharmacy program, their definition of professionalism in pharmaceutical practice, and a concrete example of ethical advocacy in a retail pharmacy setting. The essay argues that pharmacists must take an active role in patient care beyond dispensing medications, that professionalism requires setting aside personal moral judgments, and that patient safety must supersede concerns about workplace relationships. The narrative is grounded in direct experience as a retail pharmacy technician.
I am drawn to this School of Pharmacy because of the unique opportunities it offers. As a retail pharmacy technician, I have seen how important it is for pharmacists to work directly with patients. Many patients have multiple doctors and have not provided those doctors with complete medical histories. As a result, pharmacists may be the only medical providers aware of possible drug interactions or other pharmaceutical contraindications, and they cannot be relegated to the role of mere medication dispensers.
This program has a reputation for teaching pharmacists how to take an active role in patient care — being actively involved in disease management, behavior modification, and drug therapy. I believe that philosophy is one all pharmacists should embrace.
To me, professionalism means retaining the ability to do one's job regardless of the emotional or situational context of any given situation. This concept is especially important for pharmacists, because there are some medications that many pharmacists find morally objectionable. Professionalism requires that one does not impose value judgments on patients seeking care, but instead makes decisions about filling prescriptions based on medical concerns rather than ethical ones.
In addition, pharmacists often work with people who are seriously ill, which can be emotionally difficult. A professional pharmacist must be able to offer support and sound advice to patients during these difficult times without becoming overwhelmed by encounters with sickness and death. Understanding professional standards in pharmacy practice is therefore essential to providing consistent, high-quality patient care.
