Recruiting and Retaining Top Talent Using HR Strategies

~7 min read 6 sections Business · Recruitment
Abstract

This paper examines how organizations can use human resources strategies to attract, recruit, and retain top talent in order to improve overall company performance. Drawing on research from McKinsey, the Harvard Business Review, and other sources, the paper argues that high performers are disproportionately productive, making targeted hiring critical. It discusses the role of social media platforms in modern recruiting, the use of technology and computer-assisted screening in candidate selection, and the importance of creating a seamless application experience. The paper also addresses employee retention through intrinsic and extrinsic rewards, feedback loops, and a culture of respect and intellectual stimulation.

What makes this paper effective

  • Anchors every major claim in a named source—McKinsey, Harvard Business Review, Forbes—giving the argument an evidence-based foundation rather than relying on assertion alone.
  • Uses a consistent analogy throughout (recruiting talent the way a company markets a product) that makes abstract HR concepts concrete and memorable.
  • Balances practical tactical advice (which social media platform suits which profession) with higher-level strategic claims (the productivity differential between high and average performers), giving the paper both depth and immediate applicability.

Key academic technique demonstrated

The paper demonstrates effective use of selective quotation and paraphrase: direct quotes are reserved for striking statistics or particularly precise expert language, while the surrounding analysis is paraphrased and synthesized. This keeps the prose flowing while still grounding each point in credible external authority.

Structure breakdown

The paper opens by establishing why top talent matters (productivity data), then moves through the recruiting funnel—targeting candidates via social media, screening with technology, and simplifying the application process—before pivoting to the post-hire challenge of retention through engagement, culture, and structured feedback. The conclusion ties retention back to the opening premise, creating a coherent full-cycle argument. Six H2 sections map cleanly onto this progression.

The Case for Targeting Top Talent

A commonly cited cliché is that an organization is only as good as its people—in other words, that talent and organizational performance go hand-in-hand. This is even truer today than in past eras, as companies must strive to differentiate themselves from competitors with similar price points. Service is key, which demands recruiting and attracting top talent, as well as retaining that talent through the right balance of extrinsic and intrinsic rewards. According to McKinsey senior partners Scott Keller and Mary Meaney, the evidence suggests that the very best people do the majority of the work at most organizations, and that hiring and keeping the right people can result in both productivity gains and cost savings through retention. Keller and Meaney (2017) estimate that high performers are 400% more productive than average ones.

In other words, the majority of the work at many organizations is often carried out by only a small handful of people. Ideally, every position would be filled by a top performer. It is also noteworthy that for some professions, according to Keller and Meaney (2017), finding a high-level performer is even more critical—particularly in healthcare, technology, and creative occupations, where workers are estimated to be as much as 800% more productive than average. Knowledge-based workers drive the innovation and advancement of an organization by offering new ideas that serve as springboards for potentially revolutionary products and can give the organization a first-mover advantage.

Hiring initiatives need to be specific, targeted, and offer a genuine value proposition—not unlike the effective building blocks used to attract customers to a new product. New hires are interested in salaries that support their lifestyle, are emotionally fulfilling, and offer a compensation package that compares favorably with what other organizations provide (Keller & Meaney, 2017). Awareness of how the company's compensation and salary stack up against competitors is therefore essential.
